I have a Makarov that I would like to get aftermarket sights installed. The custom shop at makarov.com is closed for a couple of months. Anyone have any recommendations? I am not set on a particular brand of sights, just something I can see better than the tiny stock sights. Thanks for your input!

Welcome sandbagger ..... :) Oops .. maybe I should say ''Welcome BACK''!!

I have yet to alter mine from std but have thought about it.

Not to make this response a cheat .... do go search for this subject. Not so very long ago we had a thread running where sights were discussed ... along with other apects of the gun.

I think if you dig, you will find. Many of us here have Maks and talk about them quite a bit .. just that my memory does not serve to locate the exact thread straight away.

Oh .. may not be the one in mind ... but this was one of threads I remember.

My recommendation is to wait a couple of months for the makarov.com custom shop to open back up :p

They put the Novak sights on my Bulgarian and did an excellent job ... plus they are complete Mak-nuts so they know the guns better then most any other custom shop out there (I've heard complaints that many shops won't do the work and will tell you its a waste to put better sights on a $150 gun).

In the short term, you could get some white paint and paint the back edge of the front sight.

Ditto what Zundfolge said. I have the Novak low-mount sights on one of my Maks, courtesy of makarov.com. Yeah, it cost almost what I paid for the gun, but worth every penny. I'll probably send my other Mak to them when the custom shop reopens.

Be patient. You won't regret it :)

Any competent gunsmith should be able to install the Novak sights!!
The sights themselves are available from Brownells.
The toughest part would be to mill the slide to get them to fit!! ;)

Hi Sandbagger,

Do you have the Russian version with adjustable sights? If so, this gets trickier. To be imported to the US, the Russian Maks had to have adjustable sights installed. The fellow that milled the Russians used a piece of bar stock as his gauge, and did the milling by eye. As a result, there are wide variations in the depth of the step cut to accomodate the adjustable sights.
A good gunsmith can fit a replacement sight to the Russians, but it's expensive. Makarov.com offers replacement, do it yourself fixed rears, but you may have to shim them (I did) to get vertical POI=POA. I had Makarov.com put on the replacement fron sight and it's great, but the rear was a headache. I'm still thinking about just buying a Bulgarian and using my Russian as spare parts. I hate to give it up, because it has never failed me.

Be well.

Actually, I like the Russian commercial model's adjustable rear, but a better, larger, front sight, combined with a slightly wider rear notch makes them even better.
