I been lookin for a square butt model 12 4" for a long time. I go to a show sat. and there it is. Mod 12-2 (skinny frame) 4" in 100% shape. Butt,, it's got the wrong grips on it. Rubber, and don't fit tight in grip horn area. I ask owner of gun. Is this a square butt gun? and he says "Why yes, it is".

Last week on this very topic I attested to fact "I always take grips off and check underneath" Did I yesterday? Noooooooo. So now I've got a really nice round butt 12 that I fitted some standard S&W wood grips to yesterday afternoon. I guess I'll keep it, but it's really not what I wanted.

I didn't realize that round butt 4" Model 12s were made.

What did you have to give for it?

That's VERY interesting.

I picked up a 12-2 4" at a local pawnshop a couple of weeks ago in outstanding condition, maybe unfired,no wear to the finish,no drag line in the factory box for $275.00. My question is are these guns worth more as collectors or shooters? and what area of the frame is skinner compared to a steel K frame?

I paid $275 also. Pinned barrel. Ser #D2397XX.

The entire frame is proportionally thinner. I sanded approx .010 off each grip panel and they fit fine. I'm gettin good at this since I hadda do same thing when I bought mod 12-2 square butt 2" about a year ago. Had rubber grips on it. At that time I was unaware of frame deal. They changed frame to standard thickness with 12-4.

Whats agravating is my stupidity. I just bought a new 10 RB 4" last month. I did however buy a real nice Colt Det Spec. Turd issue with rubber Colt insig. grips yesterday also. I am now on a search for smooth wood colt grips like I had on an Agent a while back. They extend grip frame lenght via a wood insert that is on bottom.

Mine has the tapered, pinned barrel too, serial #D6572XX.I justed missed a 2" RB 12-2 that looked to be 98-100% with the box and papers that went for $250.00 on gunbroker:banghead: :fire: :cuss: When i eyeballed the butt of the frame with a 64-3 at a local shop the 2 appeared to be the same,is the frame that's not under the grips the thinner part?

Numrich Arms in West Hurley, NY have the grips you're looking for to fit the Colt "D" frame with the short butt. I presume you want the original walnut kind made by Colt.

Thanks, I'll take a look.

The entire frame, along with grip frame area is thinner on both my 12-2's. If I use a standard set of K frame grips they fit fine except in the horn area (area above S&W insignia). At that point grips stand off frame approx. .010 each side. A little sanding and regular K frame grips fit fine.

Attached is link with info on frame changes to mod 12
