A Homewood man who fatally shot one of two masked gunmen who barged into his home last night remained hospitalized in critical condition this morning with bullet wounds to his chest and hip, city police said.
Investigators said the attempted home invasion might be connected to drug dealing.
A 44-year-old man, whom police did not identify, answered a knock at the door of his home on the 700 block of Hale Street shortly before 11:30 p.m. Two masked assailants -- one carrying a handgun and the other toting a shotgun -- forced their way into the house, police said.
The resident either had a gun or grabbed one nearby and shot at the intruders, police said. The one carrying a handgun was fatally shot in the chest. The one with the shotgun blasted the resident, police said, before running off.
"We have yet to make contact with the second suspect," major crimes Lt. Kevin Kraus said.
Neither police nor the Allegheny County Coroner's office identified the dead assailant. Investigators will confer with the District Attorney's Office to determine whether his shooting was justified.
Police found drugs scattered about the front porch near the body of the dead man. Investigators were trying to determine who owned the drugs.
