I recall a few years ago I think I read that your gun will likely be confiscated if caught LEGALLY (CCW Permit) carrying in SF. Anybody?

That is a very unfriendly city towards guns. I believe CA state law allows any LEO to revoke a carry permit on the spot and I have heard that in 'Frisco (I call it that because they hate it) if you are found to be carrying cops tell you to lock in your trunk or face revocation.

Wrong. CA permits are issued by county sheriffs or chiefs of police and generally are valid state-wide, unless the issuing authority decides to limit the permit. SF is both a city and county and has both a police chief and sheriff. Both of their offices basically have a no-issue policy (which is not unusual for a large, urban county in CA), which is legal because state law gives them almost complete discretion, but they have no authority to disregard permits issued in other parts of the state, and I have never heard of them doing so. I'm sure people CCW in SF all the time, just not with permits issued by SF authorities.

Edit: The above is about revocation by any LEO. If you are "caught legally carrying", I guess that means that you failed to conceal the firearm. If open carry isn't legal where you exposed your gun to a cop, then yeah, I guess they will confiscate your gun. But that isn't just true in SF, or in CA.

Several (non-LEO) Calguns members regularly carry concealed legally in San Francisco. They report no problems.

I lived in CA for many years. I like my guns too much to put up with that liberal hell-hole. I will never go back...ever. It wouldn't surprise me if the LEO's in SF are confiscating CCW's on the spot, even if they're permitted by the letter of the law and you have a valid license from another part of the state. I wouldn't be surprised if Newsom himself is going around seizing them.

Newsom is currently the Lieutenant Governor (http://www.ltg.ca.gov/). I preferred him to stay as Mayor - smaller stage.

No, confiscations are not happening.

JJE- I may indeed be wrong, but I am repeating what I was told. As I understand it CA state law allows any LEO to confiscate a permit (this is regardless of issuing authority). I heard one man speak of dealing with a SF police offocer on a non-gun related matter and he informed the cop he was carrying with a permit and the cop told him to lock his gun in his car or his permit would be confiscated.

Perhaps that was the one cop's policy but it would not surprise me if it was mandated by the department.

Newsom is Lt. Gov of CA? God, that state is sinking faster than I imagined.

Perhaps you've heard of Alan Gura? Alan's on speed-dial with the board of the Calguns Foundation. (Literally - I was introduced to Gura at a CGF side-event to the last GRP Conference here in NorCal.) Goofy behavior as you suggest, on the part of any agency, would get a lawsuit PDQ.

I carry in SF, but I've never had cause to let anyone know so I have no idea what the police would do if they found out.

A street cop does not have the authority to consficate a permit issued by another jurisdiction. All he can do is write a letter to the issuing agency and if the complaint came from S.F. It would probably be taken with a grain of salt. JMO

I belive even Moonbeam (your govenor) carries!

Brown is actually the most gun-friendly governor California has had in a long time, and is better than Whitman (his Republican opponent) on the issue.

He has said he owns several firearms, and reportedly was the force behind the pro-Second Amendment brief (supporting incorporation) that California filed in McDonald v. Chicago (the recent SCOTUS Chicago handgun ban case). The lieutenant governor on the other hand not so much.
