The s&w 586 L comp; does it use only moonclips? Or can it use speedloaders, also? I'm unclear on this, can anyone enlighten me?

Most any revolver that can accept moonclips can also take loose ammo be it loaded free hand for by speedloader.

The moon clip cuts leave the outside of the cylinder alone so the loose rounds can still headspace normally.

WC145 has a 586 L Comp if you would like to PM him with any questions directly pertaining to that particular revolver.

Guess that's my cue! As earl said, the cylinder is cut so that you can shoot with or without moonclips, so you can use speedloaders instead if you like. Regardless, they're great guns, very accurate, porting that actually works, and a terrific trigger. I'm not so impressed with the flat blue finish, to me it was thin and cheap looking. I had a local 'smith do a little work on mine and had him parkerize it when he was done.
