Fox news article (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/05/06/dc-residents-unable-purchase-handguns-sole-dealer-seeks-new-office/)

City councilman Mendelson has no business writing gun policies for the city. Only one FFL is effectively a gun ban.

$125 dollars for a gun registry is just stupid. Illinois is bad but I am constantly reminded of worse. However DC sounds like an awsome place for about 50 new FFL dealers.......But I'm sure there is all kinds of stupid red tape to opening a new shop there.....

There are restrictions against having a gun shop within a certain number of feet of a school, church, park, playground, other things. Heck, knowing it's DC, there's probably a ban on a gun shop within a certain distance of a federal building as well. :fire:

The worst part of it to me, is the councilman's statement when asked about bringing in guns legally purchased outside of the city:

"Nowhere in the nation are residents allowed to do that"

Only in DC could this guy be for real and be allowed to head up policy on gun ownership.

Nowhere else in the nation does the House of Representatives run the show. Washington, D.C. is not a state and does not enjoy the sovereignty of a state. It's not a city, either: it's a federal district.

The D.C. gun ban could have been overturned by Congress anytime they wanted to. Congress overrules the D.C. administration. They could do so now. Congress can write an exemption from the home-state rule because residents of Washington D.C. technically don't have a home state. They could be allowed to purchase handguns in Virginia or (ugh) Maryland.

The only hope as I see it, is for the voters of D.C. take action at the polls and vote the rascals out!

When the government makes it hard for law abiding folks to obey the law it government creates a new class of criminals. And a new class of criminals is the last thing D.C. needs.

And chew off the hands that feed them? Not bloody likely.
