FAL (L1A1) gas system problem

Okay, another post about my L1A1.............:what:

So I took my lady out and checked the zero of the Millett DMS-1 I have mounted on my rifle.........she's zeroed...........

So I decide to tune the rifles gas system. I rotate the gas plug over to the right(as you look down the top of the rifle) and she only operates as a single shot, straight pull bolt action rifle no matter what the regulators position.

Next I rotate the plug to the left and dial the regulator to Zero (0) and single load as the books maual says to do. Set on Zero the action cycles and the bolt locks open.

Now if I read the FAL LAR book right.....set on Zero, the action shouldnt have cycled and shouldve been the same as the straight pull with the valve/plug closed.

I'm extremely new to this type of rifle, but it seems that if the regulator isnt funtioning as it should, I might have to replace some parts to get her functioning correctly.

I've posted some pictures as I brought her home, still with the regulator set on Zero and still cycling as if it was wide open.

As you rotate the gas regulator wheel notice the small hole on top of the gas tube? That's the vent that the regulator wheel opens and closes depending upon position. With the hole fully exposed (vent open) you will like not get a lock back on a single load round. As you rotate the regulator wheel, to close or occlude the vent hole, more and more gas goes to the piston until finally the vent hole is totally occluded by the regulator.

The typical process is to completely open the vent, single load and fire. In between shots, you gradually close the gas vent by rotating the regulator one "click" at a time until you achieve bolt lock back. Then you move forward two clicks to achieve reliability. Now all this goes out the window if you have a suppressor or have shortened the barrel of the rifle. These conditions require different setup procedures and/or modification of the gas system.

Also make certain your gas tube nut (on the end of the gas piston tube closest to the receiver) is tight and that your gas tube plug on the opposite end is set correctly and not in the position for launching grenades.

The FAL is very reliable and will run under the crappiest conditions you can imagine, but the adjustable gas system often throws people new to this gun.

I'm gonna go with Sunray about the gas plug.

Pull it out and make sure the notch is pointed towards the barrel when you put it back in.

When you rotated the gas plug,you turned off the gas flow and set the rifle up for launching grenades.Not necessary to mess with the gas plug to adjust the gas,only adjust the regulator.
