Let's try this again (original version was lost in forum glitch earlier today).....

Here are 25 types/categories that every "proper" gun collection should have at least one example of in it. Some categories "can" (technically) be filled by the same gun BUT it's not as much fun as buying one for each category.

My collection might not be as "Proper" as some folks want it to be. I don't have many new guns. General Old stuff that still shoots good is really my thing, and I own alot of these models:
1) Authentic Antique Western Lever - Winchester M1873, octagon barrel .44-40

2) Early 20th Century German Handgun - Luger, C96 Broomhandle or P38, Walther PP. If its Nazi marked or Imperial marked, thats even better. (I've got the Luger and P38, Luger is a late model S/42 and P38 is a Walther from 1944, both well littered with Nazi proofs.)

3) 1 or more Smith & Wesson Hand-Ejectors (pre-'57) (I've got a 2nd and 4th Change. One is a 1909 Nickel .38 Special, the other a 1934 Blued .32-20)

4) 1 or more Colt Snake revolvers (Anaconda, Python, Diamondback, etc). Had all 3 of these at one time but had to sell at the time.

5) Mauser action and/or Enfield Action. (I think the Enfield action is underrated). I've got a K98, No 4 Mk I, 2A, a Spanish 7x57, and a Siamese converted to .45-70.

6) Something Pre-Civil War, or even Pre-1800 would be really sweet, I have yet to get anything older than 1853. I've got the Springfield M1846 with an 1850s era cut down barrel with long range sights, plate dated 1853, barrel '55, .69 Caliber.

7) A Single Action Revolver. Got a Repro Colt New Frontier. .22LR with the interchangeable .22 Mag cylinder.

8) Early 20th Century American autoloading rifle (Winchester 07, Remington model 8) I've got the Win '07 in .351

9) Winchester model 36, 9mm Rimfire shotgun- Odd piece I used to have but had to sell awhile back.

10) Older Functioning Double Barrel. A.H. Fox, L.C. Smith number grades, Parker, or a damascus steel shotgun. I've got an 1898 L.C. 0 Grade.

11) 28 Gauge shotgun- Browning model 12

12) Winchester model 71 in the exclusive .348 Winchester. (Action is one of the biggest/toughest I've seen compared to the 1886) Also got one of these.

13) Colt Police gun, Police Positive, New Police, etc. Police Positive Special is my personal choice, got an earlier 1922 Mfg with the awesome 6'' barrel. Also the ability to include it in the lineup of modern .38 Specials.

14) Something in .218 Bee caliber, I have a Browning copy of the Winchester 65. Awsome cartridge!

15) Colt or WWII Era 1911. I'm a fan of the Gov't Series '70.

16) M1 Garand or Carbine, 03A3 would work too, I've got a pre-war 6-digit S/N January 1941 Garand and an Inland Division M1 Carbine.

List can go on, but some of those are really neat pieces that are a key part to my collection.

Wow interesting thread. I really think Iím going to have to buy some more guns as I can definitely see Iím well short of what I need to be close to the list of must haves. Never thought I was until now.

1. .38/.357 Snubnose Revolver Ė None, all my snub nose are 45 cal or bigger

2. Pump Shotgun- Winchester 1300 defender, SPAS plus a couple of others. The SPAS is both pump and semi at the push of a button
2a. Semi auto shotguns Ė BRNO, Winchester 1400ís, SPAS etc

3. An Old West Style Gun- Winchester lever rifles if they count

4. Polymer Service Pistol- Nah maybe one day but I hate plastic pistols

5. Large Bore Revolver (.41+)- Nope just about several times though

6. Defensive Carbine (aka Assualt/Black Rifle)- Not black but several sub machines might add up to one. Also several other selective fire carbines still not black though. What about my black SLRís would they be okay?

7. .22lr Pistol- Margolin and CZ Kadet plus revolvers if they count

8. European Mil Surp Several from Scorpions and several sub machine guns and carbines through to CZ 59 belt fed machine guns and stuff and FN SLRís etc. A lot are new as well

9. .38/.357 Target or Service Revolver- S&Wís plus BRNOís and things

10. .45acp 1911- Yep

11. American Mil Surp- Not many do SLRís count?

12. "Something for your Wife/Girlfriend"- CZ compacts and girly calibres both handgun and rifle but she does not shoot anymore

13. .22lr Rifle- 45 plus CZ/BRNOís plus several other makes

14. Wonder Nine Pistol- Donít know about a Wonder Nine but I do have a dozen or more 9mmís

15. Pocket Pistol/Mouse Gun- Several including CZ model 22ís, 45ís, and browning 25 cals

16. SxS or O/U Shotgun- A dozen or so many BRNOís but other makes as well in 20, 16 and 12 gauges
16a. Under/Over shotgun and shotgun/rifle combination guns Ė several BRNOís
16b. What about double rifles?

17. <20oz CCW Pistol- Not allowed to carry here in NZ but have about a dozen that would be Okay

18. NFA/Class III- Not sure what NFA is, but probably amongst the hundreds I have laying around

19. Firearm You Forgot You Owned- No, I have 1760 photos of every gun I own on my phone as well as on six hard drives and computers

20. Something "Evil Looking"- No photos of me just of the guns so I guess not

21. "Pair of" or Duplicate Gun- Well yes but most of mine are different but there are a few pairs although sometimes the calibre changes

22. Curio and Relic- Loads of them

23. Inherited/Gifted Firearm- Yes but hardly worth anything, only Longbranch and winchester

24. Bolt Action Hunting Rifle- Hundreds in several makes and a few custom ones as well. From .17 the .458

25. Something that made your wife/girlfriend angry-Never been a problem

FEEL FREE TO ADD ANY CATEGORIES I FORGOT and list your collection's representives for the various categories.

I added a couple of categories but youíll always be able to split them more. I wonít bother adding all that I have. Here are a few of the Czechís only.

Heck, a proper must have gun list should be at least 250 long!:D

So, I take it you like .22s? (huh?) And I think you have the European Mil Spec and Bolt Action requirements covered too.

The 2nd posters has a nice but more specialized collection of antique firearms.

I collect:

"Cop guns"; mostly double action revolvers of the 20th Century with the occasional autopistol - a S&W model 39 for instance. These guns either were owned by a lawman or are 'of the type' that were used in the business. My tastes run to those issued/used prior to 1980 - and that is not an exact cut off. But I tend to avoid the later S&W autos and the polymer examples.

Target guns. Some Bullseye pistols and revolvers, PPC revolvers, a few Cowboy action revolvers, a Garand in .308 Winchester, a sniper rifle and so on.

Historically significant technical examples. The Colt Government Model is a prime example, as well as the Browning High Power and the already mentioned S&W M39. Technically, the Glock 17 would fit as well, but I don't have the stomach to spend money on one to put in the collection. Matchlocks, Flintlocks, Wheel locks and percussion guns would also fit into this, but I don't have the money or space to keep them, so I'm limiting myself to cartridge guns. A 98 Mauser is one such rifle I should probably have and the British SMLE probably fits in here as well. In my collection at any rate.

Additionally, I have a weakness for S&W pinned barrel revolvers of nearly any stripe.

That's only four categories and would probably beggar me if I really sought them out. Still fun looking.

Oh. Single shot rifles fascinate me, but again, space and funds...

Nice guns though.

My apologises. I had not thought of that and certainly did not mean to break any rules or offend anyone. Iím still new here and promise to learn from my mistakes

You are quite correct a link would be easier to show the photos and I have deleted them for you. "...probably amongst the hundreds I have laying around..." You'd remember paying the tax.
There's no such thing as a 'proper' collection, but 'collections' tend to be one type/maker/era, etc. vs a bunch of assorted firearms. Mind you, a bunch of assorted firearms is a bad thing either.
"..."Pair of"..." Has to be consecutively numbered, not just 2 of the same thing. There's a shop up here with a pair of consecutively numbered, 5.5", engraved, Vaqueros with the fake ivory grips at $2929Cdn.($3,026.76US) They have a set of 5 Colt 1873 SAA Sherrif's models with an oak display case at $5499Cdn.($5,682.55US) too. I'd have to sell a kidney.

A "pair of pistols" do NOT need to have consecutive serial numbers. It's cooler
if they are consecutive BUT they definitely don't need to be that way. If it is the EXACT same model of gun then it counts as a pair.

Gun I wanted from Childhood- I already have a few BUT a F/A Thompson would be great. However, I don't see it happening and that's REALLY okay.

Specialized collections or collections with an emphasis on one (or a select few) types of guns are great, if that is what peaks your interest the most. Personally, I find it more enjoyable to have a "spice rack" with things of all different "flavors" of guns, rather than just several containers of pre-ground black pepper. However, it's all about enjoyment for the INDIVIDUAL who owns the collection.

Also, just wanted to re-mention that the same gun CAN fill multiple categories.

Let's try this again (original version was lost in forum glitch earlier today).....

I don't think that there are 25 must have guns. Really "must have" can be limitted to maybe three or four.

1. Carry Gun / House Gun - CZ P-01 or P-07 or Ruger SR9 /SR9c or Stoeger Cougar / Cougar Compact or Para Ordnance Companion

2. Small Carry Cun - CZ 2075 Rami or Bersa Thunder .380 or S&W Model 60 (2.125" barrel) or CZ 82

3. Pocket Gun - Kel Tec P-32 or P-3AT (LCP) or Bersa Thunder .380cc or Kahr P380 or Beretta Tomcat

4. Rifle (hunting) - Marlin 336 or CZ 550 or Remington 770 (Personally want a .303 British)

5. Rifle (defense) - AR 15 in 5.56 or AK 47 in 7.62 x 39

6. 1911 - Colt Government Model Series 70 or 1991A1 Government

You can take number 2 off since number 3 will cover the same ground. Number 6 really isn't a "must have" in the strictest sense. For me though every American should own a model 1911 at some point.

These proposed lists are not "collections" but rather "accumulations." As Churchill said, "This pudding has no theme." A "proper" collection, to my mind, would be something like U.S military weapons, guns of the Old West, Winchesters, Colts, WWII infantry rifles of every country, etc. The categories mentioned in the proposed lists would be relevant only within a given theme.

You can have a specialized collection featuring a single theme. I think those are some the nicest kinds of collections.

In the original post/title, the use of "proper" was meant to describe a well-rounded collection with examples representative of significant "key types" of firearms. For example, a "proper" zoo park would have bears, monkeys, big cats and little bit of everything. This is opposed to other zoo parks that cater to a specific breed or single type of animal, like a big cat sanctuary or alligator park.

Sorry, if that was misunderstood or taken out of context by anyone.

-InkEd

P.S. As others suggested, rather than being upset, use it as an excuse to buy more guns and broaden your horizons. Conversely, if you are only interested in a very specific niche of the firearms world; then you REALLY NEED to be certain to own as many variants of a specific type to have the best representation of firearms from said niche. That way you still have a reason to buy more guns. (wink)

You need to add in a single shot rifle from the pre-1903 era. I expanded it to that year so include the Stevens 44 1/2. However, as it was originally developed the Stevens couldn't handle a cartridge much larger (if at all) than a 38-55. Modern reproductions have a frame size increase and allow the chambering in such cartridges as to include 45-100 or 45-110.

Now of course the following is my opinion.

Basically THE single shot rifle to have a is a quality reproduction of an 1874 Sharps. Now I will be a bigot and specify one from the Shiloh Rifle Co in Big Timber Montana. The fit and finish of these rifles are exemplary and they just have that certain "feel" to them.

If the caliber is chosen correctly, then smokeless rounds are available, but the majority of folks usually create black powder rounds, ie: Black Powder Cartridge Rifle (or BPCR for short).

While they are not exactly the least expensive firearm by any means, they carry a wealth of history and just are a blast to shoot. (pun intended)

The movie Quigley Down Under featured a Sharps percussion rifle that was converted to be a BPCR rifle. Tom Selleck starred in this film. In the film the rifle was shown to have extreme accuracy even with the iron sights of the day. They actually were as accurate as portrayed. The chambering of the Quigley rifle was 45-110.

"Proper" to you isn't "proper" to me, collecting is different for everyone. That's what makes it interesting. Some of these categories I don't have, nor intend to. Others I'm drowning in! Lets see how I pan out - Just one from each category right?

1. .38/.357 Snubnose Revolver - S&W Model 60
2. Pump Shotgun - Winchester Model 12. My favorite pump shotgun.
3. An Old West Style Gun - Colt SAA
4. Polymer Service Pistol - A Glock 17 I'm currently trying to peddle. No more polymer after this one foray into it.
5. Large Bore Revolver (.41+) - Smith and Wesson Model 29-2
6. Defensive Carbine (aka Assualt/Black Rifle)- Colt SP1
7. .22lr Pistol - Hammerli 208
8. European Mil Surp - Don't have one, but I might eventually get an Enfield
9. .38/.357 Target or Service Revolver - S&W K-38
10. .45acp 1911 - Colt Commercial
11. American Mil Surp - 1903a3
12. "Something for your Wife/Girlfriend" - Ruger MK II
13. .22lr Rifle- Winchester 52
14. Wonder Nine Pistol - Browning Hi Power
15. Pocket Pistol/Mouse Gun - Colt 1908 Vest Pocket .25
16. SxS or O/U Shotgun - AyA and Browning Superposed
17. <20oz CCW Pistol - Don't have one. Maybe a LCR in the future.
18. NFA/Class III - Reising
19. Firearm You Forgot You Owned - A pair of old Kimmel AP-9s that sat in a closet for a decade.
20. Something "Evil Looking"- I don't have any "evil" looking guns. I do have guns that say " I mean business" however, so we'll go with a Powder Springs M10 with the Sionics can. In a small space like a hallway, its pretty ugly.
21. "Pair of" or Duplicate Gun - Colt 1903s
22. Curio and Relic - Not into milsurps really. I do have lots of old guns though.
23. Inherited/Gifted Firearm - Colt Camp Perry
24. Bolt Action Hunting Rifle - Winchester Model 70
25. Something that made your wife/girlfriend angry - None of them has.

I've thought that that eight guns are the minimum: (http://www.exurbanleague.com/misfires/Home/tabid/59/EntryId/1172/Eight-Guns.aspx) That will allow you to protect yourself and your loved ones on a day-to-day basis, compete in most casual shooting competitions and/or hunt for just about anything in North America.

A quality full sized defensive pistol. Either a medium frame revolver (preferably in .357 magnum), or a good medium frame autopistol that you are comfortable with, in a suitable defensive chambering (WonderNine, a service .40, a good 1911 etc...).
A quality pump action shotgun in 12 or 20ga, preferably with slug/rifle sights, and easily interchangeable barrels.
A quality repeating bolt action or semi-automatic rifle in a militarily useful chambering, accurate to at least 300 yards, legal for hunting medium game in your state with a good scope, and if possible a backup optic or iron sights.
A quality .22lr pistol or revolver
A quality .22lr rifle, bolt, semi or pump
A quality semi-automatic rifle or carbine short enough to be handled indoors and light enough to be packed on a long hike; preferably with both iron sights and an optic
A quality revolver or semi-automatic pistol in a defensively useful chambering of a size suitable to be carried concealed in summer without bulky covering garments, preferably with night sights.
A quality pocket gun, either semi or revolver, in .380, 9mm, or .38/.357.

IMO, that should handle all the "needs" of a regular shooter. There's obviously a lot more options than that if you want to get into collecting, cowboy action, long range rifle, practical shooting or the hunting of one kind of critter or another, but that should handle things unless there's some level of specific gun required.

The only real "must have" handguns are a 1911 in .45ACP and a .357 wheelgun.

For long guns a .22, 12GA and semiauto rifle .30 caliber.

If you're merely talking "collecting," then anything beyond that is personal taste. I like S&W, so my "must haves" are going to differ from somebody's who likes Colts.

<<< "InkEd": Here are 25 types/categories that every "proper" gun collection should have at least one example of in it. >>>

I think a category should be included for an "inherited" or "handed-down" gun,
IE: from "Grandfather to Father to Mine Now". ~

I have one or two as I am sure most of us do. Mine is:
Quackenbush, HM; made in 1896 in Herkimer NY USA; .22 cal rifle;
It was my grandfathers, he bought it in 1896 for $1.oo.
It's not in the greatest condition, but has a lot of sentimental value.
~ I am afraid to try to shoot it! :-/

What is the bottom gun in the picture?
30/40 Krag Carbine. Although not an original it started life as a 30" barreled rifle. Somebody had cut it back to 24" but left it with a full stock. I cut it to it's present Krag carbine 22" 1/2 stock configuration.

I think 25 categories might just suffice, that's why I typed "several" in many of them on my list... :D
That's more my kind of thinking, too. I'd like 25 Representational Military Surplus Rifles, 25 Military Handguns, 25 Blackpowder and BP Cartridge Longarms, 25 BP and BP Cartridge Handguns, 25 Different Shotguns by Gauge and Action Type, 25 Modern Handguns, 25 Hunting rifles, etc.

My son and I were talking about this kind of thing driving home from hunting the other day. We decided that what a proper battery of arms should contain is the following...

Centerfire rifle
Centerfire pistol
Rimfire rifle (22lr)
Shotgun

Doesn't matter what type, caliber or gauge except for the 22. Anything more than those 4 is superfluous.

Frankly, we started with all the ones mentioned by others, bolt, semi, revolver, single action, historical, etc and etc. What is all boiled down to is those four.

Centerfire rifle is for big game hunting
Centerfire pistol is for self defense
Rimfire 22lr is for varmints, plinking and training
Shotgun is for all other furry or feathered creatures

"Must Have" guns to me are the absolute essentials, and probably vary greatly depending on where you live as laws vary greatly sometimes, what shooting opportunities you have and what your interests and personal situation is.

Living in Ohio rifle hunting for our main big game, deer, is forbidden, but varmint hunting with one is OK. Legal arms for deer hunting are shotguns with slugs, handguns with barrels of 5" or longer chambered in a straight wall case of .357 cal or bigger and muzzle loaders of .38 caliber & bigger IIRC.

For me these are my essentials:

- Defensive handgun, Glock G34 9mm, bedside gun with mounted light for night work, target, could carry if I wanted or shoot matches.

- Defensive shotgun, FN SLP 12 ga, superb heavy artillary when loaded with #4 buckshot to back up the hand gun at home but minimizes the potential of overpenetration as I live in an urban area. It will also work for deer using slugs, turkey, small game, varmints etc as well.

- CMP legal flattop 5.56 AR with scope in QR mount, RRA national match, lets me keep sharp shooting matches, put on a scope for varmints or precision work and is a great homeland defense weapon.

- CCW piece, Ruger SP101 .357, allows for more discrete carry than the Glock and I really like it for answering the door, especially at night. Enough power to hit a target through the door if needed and small enough to make disappear if all is OK.

Anything beyond that is gravy.
