I'm looking for a 70 series 1911 at or under the $1k mark, either new or gently used. Knowing what you know about these and the market in general, what would you recommend for a new or gently used example that goes for this price point, and why?

Thanks for any help!

Doug

Colt Series 70 Repro, unless you're not a retro guy and you want the swoopy beavertails and such.

Springfield Armory doesn't use the firing pin safety and they make good weapons. The 70 Series Colts are also good as mentioned. They've only been out for a short time but the new S&W E series has done away with the firing pin safety. I love my S&W Gunsite Commander Sc 1911. But it does have a modified Series 80 firing pin safety that works off the grip safety instead of the trigger. It's never had a problem but to me it is just something else to go wrong.

For a 1911 without a firing pin block, you really can't go wrong with a Springfield Loaded.

If a proper retro-looking 1911 won't cut it--if you need the swoopy beavertail--then any S&W 1911 without the FP safety would be my recommendation. S&W's line is the best-kept secret in the 1911 world. They just run.

STI Trojan, no firing pin block, unbelievable trigger, accuracy and reliability for just under 1K. It does use a Wilson ramped barrel, so it is an "improvement" on the original design. It is in my experience, box stock, the best shooting 1911 for less than $1000.

Colt series 70. Either a repro or a used original.

I've seen used original Colt Series 70's selling locally for under $1,000 and there are some on GB as well.

My first choice would be a Dan Wesson Pointman.

RIA is a 70-series, for about half your price point.

SA range officer $750 or STI trojan $950 are the way to go, stay away from the stainless guns as they can't be made as tight as a blued carbon steel models. Stainless steel models tend to gall if they are made to tight.

STI Trojan would get my vote.

one other great consideration is caliber choice, 45 is going to run about $33 a box for winchester 100 qty. white box , in comparison 9mm win white box is only about $18 100 qty.

STI is made in 9mm or 45 , SA range officer 45 only

One other tip another member her posted last week end that his sr1911 ruger slide started to gall and jammed the slide, although he finally got it going by working it in with oil and a lot of racking of the slide.

Doug, do you want a plain Jane government model, or something with bells & whistles?

If you are going to shoot it, get a Colt.

My son picked up a Ruger SR1911 for $625 OTD- very impressive gun-both in build quality and accuracy.
