A Ruger old model Single Six with a XR3-RED grip frame came into my shop. the grip frame is broken and needs to be replaced, but for the life of me I cannot find a grip frame for the 'old model' revolvers.

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Call Ruger parts department and see if they have any left.

Finding an Old Model XR3-RED grip otherwise is gonna be almost impossible, as they stopped making them in 1972.

One from a New Model will not work, as there is a difference in the trigger slot, trigger return spring hole, and transfer bar clearance cut.

Do you know of anyone who makes aftermarket frames for the old model revolvers?

Brownell's used to carry a brass one. But I ain't looked lately.

I also think Power Custom makes a stainless one.
But they ain't cheap!
And will require a lot of fitting & finishing.

With preparation could the frame be TIG welded? Where is it broken/cracked.
Photos may help with other smiths or welders for assessing the work.

They only have 2 models in stock and they are both stainless. I don't remember any Rugers being available in stainless back then when the OP's gun was made.

Once again, Midway USA has them. No, they don't.

What Midway has is grip frames for current "New Model" Rugers.

The OP is looking for a grip frame for an Old Model Three-Screw gun made prior to 1972.

New Model grip frames will not work.
See post #2 for why.

Collectors tend to buy up the old frames that are in good shape. A new model frame can be made to work, I have two. You have to add a bock (already drilled) in the open space behind the trigger for the trigger return spring and plunger, then pin it. Can't do anything about the wider trigger opening. Since you have the original frame, you can see what needs to be done to a NM frame. BTW, I have also seen a 22LR case used rather than the block, it was epoxied in place and worked fine, for how long I do not know.

Found this thread in a search and thought I'd put my two cents in for future reference.

The Ruger Old Army grip frames are interchangeable with all Old Model Blackhawks, Super Blackhawks and Single Sixes and are of the XR3-RED pattern.

Ruger probably has them but won't sell parts for Old Models that have not been converted. Doesn't matter because the "blued" Old Army grip frame is the same and readily available.

That said, it is relatively easy to find take-off grip frames, especially for the XR3-RED. They are usually pretty cheap, $50 or less. What is not cheap is the original XR3, which is a dead ringer for the Colt SAA grip frame and typically goes for $75-$150. However, they are not difficult to procure either if you are willing to pay for them.

I'd suggest a want to trade post on RugerForum.
