Guy and Gals,

I have been thinking about building this platform for a while. I am looking for some advice on the ins and outs those of you who have done this can tell me about. I am planning on using a spare lower that I have laying around. It is a stag .223 lower with an A2 stock. I have no problem changing that around or leaving it the way it is. I guess I'm wondering if I should just ordera standard RRA upper or build it myself and try some cool upgrades or something.

does the .458 require a different bolt, buffer, etc?

I'd look for a used upper; your initial investment will be high enough (dies, brass, bullets).

If it turns out that you don't like it, you could strip it down and sell off the .458-specific parts.

I just helped a friend build one. Looking at the options out there, it was just easier and cheaper to order the complete upper from RRA. He got the mid-length gas setup that came with heavier buffer springs. I have not shot it yet but everything appears good and solid. We did replace the factory FF tube with a Midwest Industries SS model.

"does the .458 require a different bolt, buffer, etc?"

Yes it requires a complete upper unit however the lower unit and mags are interchangable between calibers.

What was you reason for replacing the FF tube

Accessorizing :D. He wanted to add an AFG and light. The MI SS is modular and allows rails where you need them and no rails where you don't.

BTW, the upper came through Legal Transfers instead of RRA direct.
