First outing with Ruger SR1911

May 29, 2011, 04:10 AM
Picked up my new Ruger SR1911 a few days ago and had the first opportunity to fire it tonight. Sent 154 rounds down range, 100 rnds of WWB ball, 40 rnds of Federal Champion ball and 14 rnds of my 200 grain lead SWC handloads. The pistol was field stripped, cleaned and lubed before the session.

There were a couple of problems, one failure to feed early in the shooting session that was easily cleared (Federal ball ammo). This did not reoccur.

Another problem that existed during the first approximately 10 magazines was the failure of the slide to be held back after the last shot. This cleared-up and hopefully was just part of the breaking in process. I tried not only the supplied Ruger mags, but also a Wilson and a number of Metal-Forms. All worked fine.

The trigger has an inconsistent bit of creep at the very beginning of take-up with a clean break at an estimated 5 lbs.

The sights are close, but will need a bit of tweeking, nice Novacks. I shot at 10 yards at blank paper plates, most shots going into a ragged hole. I was more interested in mechanical reliability than accuracy tonight.

Overall I am very impressed with the level of workmanship on the SR1911. And I hope the few glitches I experienced were just early break-in problems.

thank you for the short review. it's the initial beta testers that determine whether a new production gun is worth buying to me.

Congrats on the new pistol. Sounds like typical 1911 break-in. Hopefully the slight bugs are gone now. Keep us informed.;)

I bought a new FNP-40 and on the very first magazine I shot through it, it didn't lock back on empty. After that it was fine.

14 round mags and 298 shots means I shot about 21-22 magazines worth. I assume like you it was a break in issue.

You stated you had tried several different types of magazines, which make were you using when you the slide would not remain open after the last round.

Regardless, great handgun, and congratulations.

The only problem I have with your report is that WE NEED PICTURES.....

Pix? This thread is worthless without pix....:D

I'll keep my P90, love that gun. I gave up 1911s years ago.

I recently picked one up myself. Functioned perfect with a 100 rounds of Blazer. Only run the the mags that came with it. Only thing so far is the trigger is over five pounds, but it is fairly crisp.

The failure to hold the slide back problem occurred with the Ruger mags, but remember it cleared-up half way through the session. Sorry guys, no pictures, but there are tons of pictures and video reports of the Ruger SR1911 all over the web, especially U-Tube.
