I found a M96 mauser. It's in very good condition, with a great looking bore, but it was expensive - $250. Whoever had it before varnished the stock. Otherwise, the gun is original, with matching numbers. It also came with a bayonet. Other than the varnish, the gun and stock is in really, really good shape.

It has a threaded muzzle and is missing, I assume, some sort of muzzle thread protector. Where could I find one of these?

Also, is there suppose to be a hood over the front sight?

Also, did I pay too much for this rifle?

Do people use the blunt (old) or do they use pointed ammo with this rifle?

I'd try Dennis Kroh (Empire Arms) for the muzzle protector. There are many variants out there (none original, since that was a piece of plastic), but his look nice, whereas many others don't. If you could find where he buys his, you might save some money, but....

You paid just about right and the sight hood was not standard to the issued variant of the gun, but used for target and sniper rifles, or so I was told.

Sweden used wood bulleted blanks, the muzzle threads are for a bullet shredding blank firing adaptor. Sarco is where I got my sight hoods, thread protectors, and tall front sights. The muzzle brake looks weird on the 96 but kind of cool on the 38 (in an FR-8 sort of way).
You don't see the 160 gr. roundnose bullets too often, but every Swede I have likes the 140 spitzers just fine.
$250 is on the high end of the price range, but next year will probably be in the middle, or even the lower end ! They are drying up and the price is climbing (bought mine when they first came around, something like $89ea. I think) they are accurate and sweet to shoot, ENJOY.....HTH
