I've owned several Minis but have a bad habit of giving them away to my children.
My preference is the stainless steel Ranch Rifle. I do like the Hogue Overmold stock and, now that I'm older, usually install a 6X or 3-9X 'scope on 'em. Accuracy Systems offers an inexpensive (~$20) gas port shim kit that does wonders to control the violent ejection of cartridge cases. I use the smallest port diameter and still have flawless function. I have had a 16.5-inch barrel version but found that the standard Ranch rifle will launch a cartridge with 50 to 70 FPS more velocity with that extra 1.5 inches of barrel. Stainless steel helps with corrosion control and makes it easier to see where you need to clean it.
I see the Mini as a wonderfully light carbine that the user can do some quick follow-up shots as needed. It's practical accuracy is about equal to the average AR-15/M-4 clone, especially if you use those shims to calm the thing down.
It is NOT a battle rifle. It is NOT designed to rapidly blow magazine after 30-round magazine through it. If you desire a "tactical" rifle, I suggest you purchase an AR-15 or an SR-556.
A Mini WILL provide many years of reliable service and plenty of those quick, follow-up shots. "Dak rats" (prairie dogs) were favorite targets when I lived at Minot.

I have both, also a series 189 mini 30. the tactical is 581 series and with a 2x7x33 Redfield I shoot 1 1/2" 100 yard groups, cant say that about the older mini 14 but I like em. I also own ar15s and AR10s, but the mini is just that, a mini 14, I love the Garand type rifles. if I ever get the hand of photobucket I will post a pic. I just got me a new Springfield Armory M1A to keep them company. if you are looking to buy a more accurate mini, go with the newer 580 & 581 series. at about $600 or more, to me they are still worth it.

I own a Ranch 14 and a Tactical 30. Couldn't help you decide between Ranch or Tactical though...I do prefer a bit longer barrel.

I have the 581 series ranch model in stainless steel. I am very happy with it. It short, light, handy and has a very light kick. It's even perfect for a HD weapon due to its size. My mini 14 is my coyote hunting rifle.

i went with the ranch, i liked its length and the fact that its stainless.....a bit less work to keep clean.

Here's my review of the 581 tactical. I believe you'll find that the shorter barrel (less whip) of the tactical along with the flash suppressor will garner you better groups than with the ranch. This is individual rifle dependent of course, but from what I've seen of other owners out there, that is the consensus.
