Ore. hunter sentenced to road work for shooting

EUGENE -- A hunter who critically wounded another hunter in November after mistaking him for a deer was sentenced to 20 days on the sheriff's road crew.


Lane County Circuit Judge Doug Mitchell also banned Trevor Kory Foster, 20, of Eugene from hunting during two years of probation and ordered him to pay $865 in attorney's fees and court costs.


He was convicted of misdemeanor assault and negligently wounding another.

The victim, 21-year-old Nicholas Lee Peterson, said he hopes the case encourages hunters to be more careful. He still cannot straighten his left arm, after being shot in the elbow and ribs with a .270-caliber rifle.


Peterson said he feels lucky the high-powered rifle shot didn't kill him.


Foster fired the shot around dark on the final day of deer season as Peterson was in a wooded area. Peterson was rattling deer antlers at the time, a technique used to attract bucks. After he was shot, Peterson walked and crawled to within shouting distance of his home, where medics were summoned.


In court Tuesday, Foster also apologized to Peterson

Did the article say he was wearing orange? It's not required in many places. No one hear wears orange...full camo is the dress of most of the hunting crowd....so they can go sit in a fully enclosed stand. :banghead:

Around here shooting is supposed to stop at sundown. An hour latter is stretching the season for both of them a bit isn't it? Sounds like both of them may have been a little guilty of gross stupidity.

here the law is half an hour before sunrise and after dusk. Granted I don't have much (any) hunting experience, but why would the moron fire his gun when he can't see a deer?:fire: This idiot gives all of us a bad name.

Man, this guy got off way too light. But if you think that's bad, check articles where people kill motorcyclists with their cars. A simple " I didn't see him" usually gets them off.

He probably did in sense. He'd better hang on to that .270 if it hasn't already been surrendered. I suspect this incident will affect any future weapon purchases.
