~600 budget, what should i do?

January 16, 2004, 01:27 PM
should i buy:

$550 Sig P229 .40 w/ 2 mags, 50 rounds of Winchester 180gr. Personal Protection, 20 rounds of (165gr--high impact) Cor-Bon personal protection

$400 Taurus PT-92 9mm (NIB) and $150 on a used Makarov

The sig would act as a carry/home but with the taurus/mak, I could keep the taurus at home and carry the Mak.

Any other suggestions?

The Taurus/Makarov idea sounds like a great one...

One thing to think about though: The gun isn't the only part of the "tool kit." Once you get the gun(s), you may find that there are other accessories that you want/need, such as holsters, extra magazines, cleaning supplies, etc.

But your head is in the right place -- with this plan, you have a pistol to carry, and you have a bigger backup at home. Great plan.

Just remember that you at least need a little extra left over to get ammo with. :p

well, the 550 is my "gun" budget. i've got an ammo budget too :D

I know we are in the autoloader section, but why not consider getting two .357 mag revolvers, one full size 4" and the other a snub or one and a lot of ammo and a good tritium dot?

Buy the Taurus, forget the MAK, spend the extra money on ammo.

is 400 a good price for the NIB taurus? im not sure how many mags it comes with, i assume 1. i can pick up some more from gunbroker so thats not a problem. its a gun shop so im not sure how much i can haggle. maybe ill see if he'll take 350 for it :o

I'd get a cz40 new for about $250.00 to $300.00, and get the mak:neener: .....tom

January 16, 2004, 03:43 PM
i'm not too fond of the CZ's styling...

January 16, 2004, 03:51 PM
The cz40 is styled like a colt 1911 but perhaps that is what you meant, personally I think it is the best value in an autoloader out there.......tom

and then you can make it look like this :D

and if you don't like these I would say get the sig, they are great guns.....

Buy the Sig. Keep it with you at all times.

Don't switch platforms.

Spend additional money found on ammo and training.

Definitely go for the Sig! Sigs are great guns and really fun to shoot. I'd rather have 1 sig than a taurus (blah!) and a mak.

Personally, I'd go for the Sig. It is a proven platform that is used by many police depts. and federal agencies.

In your post you wrote about other possible candidates. Some that come to mind are Walther P99, just about any of the Glocks ( I've seen used ones go for under $400.00 from CDNN, KY Imports, or SOG). Same with the Sigs. I recently received the latest SOG catalog and they had used 229's in there for around $400.00 and change. I believe brand new Beretta 92/96's can be had for right around $550.00. CDNN has HK USP .40's for under $400.00 used.

With a budget of $600.00 there is a lot that can be had. I've been going the route of used handguns lately. Provided the owner took decent care of the pistol, you usually can get pretty goods deals looking for used stuff.

Here are some links that helped me out greatly.
CDNN (http://www.cdnninvestments.com)
SOG ( Southern Ohio Gun) (http://www.southernohiogun.com)
KY Imports (http://www.kyimports.com)

Hope this helps.

$550 for a Sig is a steal. Grab it.

January 16, 2004, 05:11 PM
That's a good price for the Sig.

Also, you can afford a Glock 19/23. If you are going to be carrying, no other gun will go 'bang' quite so consistantly as a Glock.

I am one of the farthest things from a Sig fan that you will ever find but I think that the 229 in .40 S&W is probably the softest-shooting and absolute best .40 out there. Size is ok, though a little on the large side for what it is, but it's fine. If that's your budget, go for the Sig. The other option isn't worth it, IMO.

$300 for a Ruger P95,
one case of defensive ammo of your choice, one case of practice ammo, and some range time. Good gun that you can carry anywhere, and plenty of practice, which is what really matters!

Glock 20

10 mm power baby :D

I got my LNIB Taurus 92 used for $260 w/ 3 high caps, never have a problem as far as function and accuracy (combat) goes. If you don't mind buying used, there's alot of great deals out there.
As far as your choices goes, I like the idea of having two guns one for carry and one for home but, I'de keep the caliber standard for both. Its easier on the logistics aspect. That said, I'll suggest that you consider the Keltec P11. Good luck! :)

If the Sig is used...be careful...if new grab it. A 550 dollar Sig is NOT a steal if it is used. Also maybe consider a Glock? I don't like them but a lot of people do. Maybe consider a Springfield XD....one of the nicest guns I've ever shot...I even bought my dad one. My personal favorite you can buy brand new for 550 and switch calibers from 9mm to 40 to 357 sig....the SIG PRO 2340...the 9mm conversion is after market. It weighs 27 ounces...the same as a steel J frame with a 2 inch barrel and is customizable for the grip size. It is the most accurate .40 I have ever shot and I carry one every day...unless I have my PCR.

Springfield MilSpec loaded or a Glock 17, both guns leave room for extra mags.;)

January 16, 2004, 11:20 PM
Sig over the Taurus, anyday!

January 17, 2004, 07:58 AM
DUDE! GET A GLOCK! :what: :D

For a CCW/Home gun on your budget, out of your existing choices......get the SIG..............

There I said it...........:D

Shoot well.

January 17, 2004, 08:52 PM
GLOCK Which ever you want.

January 17, 2004, 08:58 PM
Unless you're dead set on a Taurus, consider a Beretta. They can be had used in Exc or like new condition for 400.

January 18, 2004, 08:18 AM
Of the two options you gave... Id go with:

$550 Sig P229 .40 w/ 2 mags, 50 rounds of Winchester 180gr. Personal Protection, 20 rounds of (165gr--high impact) Cor-Bon personal protection

However... someone did mention cdnninvestments. They have used SIG and HK pistols that are very very inexpensive. I would take a look at those.

Also, a NIB CZ sounded like a good idea to me also. With $600 You could probably get two used CZs :)
