Does anyone have or read of tests on the Sig 522? My future FIL wants one, and asked my opinion. I'm more of a hunting 22 fan so haven't paid any attention to them. Any input would help.

I have one and they work just fine. If you were here in NH I could sell him one at a great price!

We've a pair, one with a red dot, the other a cheap 3x9 scope and a bunch of Blackdog Machine mags. Works great with the Federal Bulk pack form Walmart. Its light enough and the stock collapses short enough that its a good fit for my wife, she loves shooting it. First rifle she actually wants to shoot!

Paid $300 for the first one at a gun show, got the second "free" when I got my SIG 556 DMR from CDNN.

I have the 522 swat and love it. Eats everything I feed it and accurate too.

I have one as well, the reason I got it was because it takes Black Dog Machine magazines, very accurate (as long as I do my part), and has been very reliable.

There are two things to keep in mind.

When I got my rifle about a year back it did not come with iron sights so you may have to consider that as an additional cost. Of course if you plan to use optics this is not really a problem. Also for the iron sights on the classic version the front sight may need a small dovetail adapter to bring it up to the correct height as the rear sight (I am not sure if this is needed with the kit that is sold by Sig). I had to do this with my Magpul MBUS set that I put on mine.

Secondly my Sig was an older version so I discovered that I had the tapered recoil rod which needed to replace (I had not fired it at that time).

The included link is what to look out for and the fix should you come across it:

After contacting Sig I was able to get a replacement within a week and it was really easy to install myself.

Despite these two negatives I really like this rifle and appreciate it being my plinking gun/dedicated 22.

I have fired roughly 700 rounds with no issues at all (Federal 550 Bulk pack ammo from Wally World).

Let me know if you have any questions.

I have the 522 combo and it's really a fun accurate rifle.

I was set on buying the S&W 15-22 until I happened to get a chance to shoot the Sig. The Sig felt better and I found a good deal on the combo new.

I also have a SIG522. Mine is the classic version, in black.
It has had just over 1500 rounds through it and only 4 failures: two light strikes and two stove-pipes.
Two things to look out for:

1) You need to make sure the gun has a shiny bolt, not the two-tone one with the rear half parkerized. That two-tone one is the old bolt with the tapered rod mentioned above.

2) There are some versions of the rifle being sold with a welded flash hider. If you want to put a suppressor on it, best specify that the rifle must have a removable flash hider.

Two things that are "features":

1) There is no traditional last round hold open. The bolt holds halfway open, against the magazine. If you take the magazine out, the bolt goes forward. There is a bolt stay, but it locks only if you pull the bolt all the way back.

2) The stock is a bit short, even if you use the fattest pad as supplied in the box. That's a minor gripe, but worth thinking of.

I am waiting for a suppressor to arrive, then I will test that. Currently I use this for standing 25 yard and 50 yard shooting, with a cheap Mueller reflex dot. It works very well.
I saw on Rimfire central that a guy took out the fake gas tube and replaced that with a green laser. Looked like an interesting mod.

it takes Black Dog Machine magazines
Yup. The same ones that work in the CMMG adapter for my AR's. Very handy.
