Yesterday I bought my first 1911. Got it home loaded up, pulled the slide back and it stopped. Played with it for a while and figured out when I stack 6 in it works fine. The mag is a Mec-Gar. What's your thought? Also what are some good quality mags?

What model of 1911?

I'll bet that the seventh round is contacting the inside lobe of the slide release. You can confirm this by pulling the top end off the frame, reinstalling the slide release, and inserting a loaded magazine. Is anything touching the slide stop and forcing it up?

A Taurus PT1911. Nope looks good. These are JHP just in case that might be a problem. And another sidenote is that it's super though to get in the 7th and 8th rounds.

Get Wilson mags. Mine are great. ETM's are 8 shot.

What do you mean by "it stopped." Does the slide not pull back? Or on slide release does the first round jam up in the feed ramp?

The gun should work with the factory mag. If it doesn't, just buying a new mag may not fix the issue or it might mask an issue that should be properly fixed.

The OP isn't giving us enough to go by.

In general, MecGar isn't a bad 1911 magazine.
But every production line sends out a bad one now and then.

Brand new gun, I bet it's a nosedive jam on hollow points.

Most importantly, be careful where you point it when you're "playing around" as more than one 1911 has shipped from the manufacturer with hammer follow problems.

Second, is the top round seated properly in the magazine with its base touching the back of the magazine and are you seating it firmly when loading?

When I rack the slide back and release it the round doesn't leave the mag. The nosedive is how I would explain it. Oh yes very aware of where the firearm is pointed! Yes the rounds are always to the back. This is the first 1911 I've owned but far from the first time using one.

Your not riding the slide down are you? I see a lot of people do it and it will a lot of times cause your issue.

Nose-diving can be one of two issues.
It might be a magazine issue.
The 8 round magazine is dimensionally the same as the original 7 rd magazines
that some mfgs decided to try to stick an extra round in - hence they have occasional issues - especially the cheap ones.

The other issue could be the feed ramp on the gun itself.
This area needs to be highly polished in order for the ammo to smoothly slide into the chamber.

Take the slide off, reinsert a full magazine & push the rounds out.
If it catches on the front of the mag, you know a better quality mag will probably help.

Never saw a 1911 that had to have a HIGHLY POLISHED feed ramp to feed ammo.

Saw and heard of a few that was ruined by polishing the ramp.

During WW2, Ithaca made a mistake on an isolated run of their contract pistols that had the parkerizing applied after the feed ramps were finish machined. When it was discovered...rather than immediately sending them back...the Army inspectors decided to test them for function before jumping too quickly. They worked just fine. Parkerized.
