Just bought one from the local Cabela's!!!. I took it out to the range on Sunday afternoon. Love to shoot it, hate the gigantic front blade sight. Any recommendations from owners? I'm 41 and the eyesight is starting to go. I'll be using the firearm for plinking, small game hunting, and maybe some bowling pin shooting the local range puts on. Also, I'll need something for indoor & outdoor shooting. Please don't recommend anything that costs more than my car payment either..;)

A red dot sight. They are SWEET.. lots of brands to choose from.

I picked up a red dot sight for about $35 I use on my Ruger. I have also picked up a green dot from Primary Arms for about $75 for my 1911

Good purchase! I got the 22/45 with the threaded barrel and I agree about the front sight, its a touch too big so I swapped mine out with a Hi-Viz fiber optic sight after using my friends buckmark with that set-up. Makes a world of difference, a little easier to shoot and see. Definitely recommend it, its about $40 and you can install it yourself.

Matchdot Ultradot. Any other red dot is a waste of time. If you want to stick with irons, then the hi-viz is a great choice.

I put a hi-viz front sight on mine. hurts for precision/paper punching work, but helps everywhere else.

Aging eyes can relate to than, red dots are a life saver. If you want a holographic red dot vs tube the Mueller Quick Shot has been good to me. Mine is over 2 yrs old now and still on the original battery. It has enough brightness for full bright sun light. http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Mueller_1x22x33_Holographic_Sight_MQS12233MB_p/mqs12233mb.htm

Thanks for the info guys. Now I need to get a Hogue or Pachmayr slip on grip for it....i think the Ruger P95 one will fit? Already thinking about a new trigger and compensator for the blasted thing, cuz now i want a speed gun!! Damn, I can see another addiction in my future....

BTW...Any of you know of a good gunsmith who can work on rugers in central Nebraska???

I would recommend the VQ rubber grip; its nice and beefy and has a thumb-rest. Otherwise the Hogue grip is pretty nice.

For trigger, I recommend the VQ full kit and a MK2 bushing so you can eliminate the magazine disconnect. You can do all the work yourself with a set of punches. Its very easy. I didn't think I could do it myself, but with some time and patience, its very easy to do the full swap of parts and you will get to learn a lot more about how the gun works while you are at it. The VQ parts will also give you an extended bolt release.

The VQ extractor is a good piece, especially for used guns. Its more precise and harder metal than the stock extractor, so it makes for good insurance against stove-pipes. I had a MKII that would stove-pipe a lot and this fixed it. You can install the extractor yourself with a dental pick.

Also, if you are going to do speed challenges, you might want to look at the VQ magazine ejector for the MKIII, which puts a spring above the magazine and will cause them to go shooting out, even when partially loaded. Very nice if you are doing speed work.

Seriously, the work is easy and you will learn a lot about how the gun works. You don't even really need narrow fingers, just a needlenose if you can't quite fit into the frame. Get the parts and give it a thought as to doing it yourself. I was afraid at first and was going to take mine to a smith but eventually decided to give it a go. I am not gun savvy at all, nor that mechanically inclined, but I was able to do it.

I will agree with 1KPerDay 100%. The Hi-Viz should fit your needs perfectly. I tried them and liked them but for target shooting I found the stock sight with a little orange paint to be slightly more accurate. It was a hard decision as I really like the Hi-Viz and would have them on my gun if I used it for anything other than punching holes in paper.

I put a cheap red dot and a limb saver slip on grip cover on mine and love it... Check out some rapid fire vids here:
