The shell holders are not the same. The one for the primer tool is specifically for use on that tool.

Yes, shell holders for a press are pretty much universal, at least for what I've seen. I started out with Lee and recently went to a Redding turret press. Shell holders for the presses are the same, the ones for the priming tool are just for that tool.

Enjoy.

Shell holders for current manufacture main stream single stage presses will fit just about any other's manufacturer's press.

There may be a specialty press or two that have unique shell holders but I don't know of any off hand.

Shell plates for progressives are unique to the press they are designed for.

There may be some older single stage presses that have shell holders unique to that particular press.

Shell holders for the Lee Auto Prime will not work on a press. i believe Sinclair international makes a priming tool that also uses the Lee Auto Prime shell holders.

Rule of thumb for single stage and turret press. Each brand of shell holders for reloading dies fits the press.

Now there are a couple hand priming tools that use Lee Auto Prime Shell Holders too....the Sinclair and K&M come to mind.

The issues come into play with accessories....
Like RCBS Hand Priming Tools need only RCBS Shell Holders due to the bevel cut on the botton of the shellholder.
The Hornady Case Prep center only works with Hornady Shell Holders...

I have an RCBS hand primer, and some shell holders won't work without a small mod. Sounds like you are using the Lee, so you are good to go with the special SH's for it.

I ran into the shell holder problem Walkalong mentioned. My shell holders are mostly made by Lee. While they work in all the presses I've tried from 3 different companies they did not work in a RCBS hand primer. It seems at the underside of the shell holder where the extension is that fits into the press the angle on the base is different than that used by RCBS. It will go into the hand primer tool but not all the way in so it can't be used. It's annoying to have to buy shell holder for the calibers you already own but that's the way it goes sometimes... LOL

Just so you know, Lee sells an almost full set of shell holders for their hand priming tool. It comes with 11 holders for a lot cheaper than if you buy them separately. Actually Midway has the set on sale right now for only $13.71. Click Here (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=566058) Considering they cost $3 each when bought separately that's quite a savings.
