I looked and looked, and find that THR has no major collection of user knives!?!? A few other forums have huge collections. So come on everyone, let's chip in a make a thread in the hundreds of pages with knife pics.

Ones you own, ones you love or hate, ones you want to show off. Let's get going!

If you enjoyed reading about "A THR knife PICTURE thread?!?!" here in TheHighRoad.org archive, you'll LOVE our community. Come join TheHighRoad.org today for the full version!

I think HSO was just setting parameters for the thread for everyone not you or I?

Deltaboy, now you made me take a pic of my new Trekker. Just got it to compliment the black one.

It would probably be in bad taste if I tried to catalog all the junk hardware stowed in boxes and drawers.

However, perhaps a couple at a time?

With each picture that I post, I will also include a link to the "gallery" script that displays all the photos in that directory. That way, if you're so inclined, you can see all the out-takes for the knives where I post the one or two marginally acceptable pix I have.

Without further ado . . .

First knife I was ever given. November 1st, 1961. Imperial US Officers Ulster 916 (http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2009_1005-Knife/Smaller/images.php) (scout/camp, US Army issue clone with red scales). I still have it.

Closed, notice the post on the screwdriver/bottle opener blade. (Bad color reproduction. Trust me, it's red.)
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2009_1005-Knife/Smaller/2009_1005-Knife001.jpg

Open, showing main blade tang stamp.
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2009_1005-Knife/Smaller/2009_1005-Knife008.jpg

Open, using flash, showing tang stamp and faded etching. (Told you it was red.)
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2009_1005-Knife/Smaller/2009_1005-Knife012.jpg

Here's a few knives (http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2007_1208-knife/images.php) I discovered when I was unpacking shortly after moving to Idaho. I was thrilled -- there were knives in there I hadn't been able to find for more than five years!

An original Gerber Guardian. Cast aluminum handle w/Armorhide coating.
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2007_1208-knife/2007_1208-Knife-01.jpg

A Gerber Shorty hunting knife, purchased at the Ramstein AFB Base Exchange in 1971. (Not shown is the Mini Magnum, whose blade I broke.)
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2007_1208-knife/2007_1208-Knife-06.jpg

Here's the Guardian, the Shorty, and an original Muskie (before they added the spoon tip to the handle).
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2007_1208-knife/2007_1208-Knife-07.jpg

I don't own many Barlow knives, but I do have a nice US-made Remington:
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2007_1208-knife/2007_1208-Knife-11.jpg

Oh, and in that same box was my Ontario Spec Plus Fighter:
http://noisyroom.net/pix/thr/2007_1208-knife/2007_1208-Knife-05.jpg

I guess I'll get out of the way now and let someone else post a few pix.

I'll have more later.

:)

I do have a few...this post shows maybe 1/3 of my collection...

Well....there is my general display area that has a few of my knives...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/slipjoints/shelf.jpg

Then we have some of the various SAKs...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/slipjoints/saks.jpg

And scout patterns...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/slipjoints/scouts.jpg

Barlows are a favorite...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/slipjoints/barlowsfam1a1.jpg

The Cold Steel Classics in Carbon V make a nice set...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/slipjoints/cstrads.jpg

For inexpensive knives the Colt Brown Stag are very nicely made...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/colt/coltsincabinet.jpg

I also like custom knives...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/customs/cust1a.jpg

I do own knives other than folders as well...

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z271/reloader1959/fixed%20blades/fb3.jpg

Then of course you have "tactical" knives...

Yep...been modding thumbhole knives like that since the eighties, long before the Emerson Wave.

I saw a solitary CS Twist Master above...more fun to have a set...These are the small TW's and a size comparison with a large version

Stag Landshark I made:

And the knife that was in Blade magazine, my Super Camp with giraffe bone handles:

All 3 of those pics were by Rob at Balance Digital.

This isn't quite all of my knives, but it's most of them. This picture is missing my Mini-Grip, my Ka-bar, my Becker Campanion (which is on my backpack in my car) a couple of machetes, and a couple of others to include a knife from a fellow THR member that was a special and surprise gift, but this is pretty much it. Speaking of surprise gifts, the Spyderco third from the bottom was also a special surprise gift from another THR member. There are some very nice, very generous people on THR, and thank you two guys again! Also, I just bought an old, USA Sharpfinger from a pawnshop and just forgot to include it in the pic, even though it is laying in the drawer of that table, lol. Still working on rehabbing the edge on my Sharpmaker, but it's coming along. Nothing special, just an old knife that with a little TLC still has a ton of use in it. I was happy to pay five bucks for it.

Also, pardon my spotting scope case there... I went shooting today and actually took a break from cleaning guns and putting stuff away to take this pic. Also, I would say pardon the cell phone picture, but from a shaky cell phone with a dirty lens from pocket carry, I actually don't think the quality is that bad!

That's why it isn't exactly "fair" for me to participate in these things. That's one drawer out of several. I've backed down on my collecting but increased the average "cost" of what I collect these days so you won't see many production knives more recent than 6 years back.

What I like falls into different categories. Some are vintage autos and I like them differently than the modern versions. Some are art and some are users and I like them differently. Some are made by friends and I like them differently than the ones that aren't.

I like the small MTs and the small GT. They'll fit in a watch pocket, feel good in the hand and SNAP.

I like the Vallottons because they're very well made double action autos and they're friends.

I like the antique fishtail because it is an old Schrade.

Still haven't cleaned the waterspots of my lens from being caught in the rain last week , but I did snap a few quick shots to show off my new John Lloyd slipjoint.

I told John I love the Remington Baby Bullet Trapper , but didn't care for a two blade knife , and asked if he would do something similar but with a single blade ( essentially leaving off the spey blade ) , this is what arrived today. It blew me away as soon as I opened the package.

Can't say I would change anything on this knife , and it slipped into my pocket like it belongs there , which is good , cause it is going to get used.
Blade steel is one of my favorites : 52100 !

I got a few of these at Christmas for my Dad, brother and self. Great little knife with the added twist of the handle made from oak scraps from a project to build a replica of l'Hermione, Lafayette's frigate. See http://www.opiknife.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Opinel-No-8-Hermione-folding-knife.

I bought this Kershaw five years ago when I was 16, and after years of hard use, snapping the tip off and having to send it back for a new blade (which was not only free, but incredibly easy), and generally beating the crap out of it, I can't ask for a better every day carry knife. Spring assisted opening is still crisp after thousands of openings. Its my only knife aside from a Ka-Bar buried somewhere.

Hehe, the blue Spyderco is a Dodo, it has been discontinued for some time and very popular with collectors and users. The lock is a ball bearing lock, not an axis lock. Very simple lock design but locks extremely tight. Eric, Sal's son, designed the knife and have a custom version where the ball bearing used is ceramic instead of steel for better wear resistance.

Light weight, differentially heat treated O1, micarta scales, kydex neck sheath.

Very much a little knife that performs like a big one. Used to set up camp and perform standard camp chores from carving tent stakes and fire pit frames to cutting food. Oh, and it eats heavy cardboard like a woodchuck chucks wood.

This is one of my favorite hunting knives. FROST Cutlery (imported from China) with custom made leather sheath. Overall length 8.25 inches.

Grade of steel is an unknown but its stainless never the less. It holds an edge well enough to skin two deer before re sharpening on angled cermic sticks. The large handle and blade shape are TOPS!!

OOOOH Knives, pre y2k I started searching for GOOD knives and was rapped up hard in that hobby for several years. I am not as active but manage to buy a few every now n again in between high end airgun and firearm acquisitions.

I actually came up with a unique graphic for the Chris Reeve Sebenza back in 2000 that actually means quite a bit to me and a few others called the Calvary Sebenza, my small part in knife history. I like CRK stuff A LOT...

I got bored with some glow in the dark paint, but I was too lazy to tape off the rings. So please excuse the ugly edges.

Really enjoyed reading/viewing through this thread, you guys have some seriously gorgeous cutlery! I don't have nearly as many blade-photos as I have blades, but am now inspired to remedy this. My blades are all over my domicile, so in the next couple days I'll get some photos of the good ones and post 'em here :)

Just picked up a Leek after hearing all the positive reviews on it. Now that I have one I can see why they are so well loved. It's super fast, light and wonderfully precise. I'll be using it as my light use edc knife.

Great pieces by everyone here. I only have a few pieces left from my collection. Will try and get some pics up tomorrow. I have a Beretta 3" lock blade from the late 80's that is my favorite.

It isn't really that special to look at, but it saved my life once while putting up Christmas lights at my parents place. Slipped on a wet spot (was on the roof) and slid off the edge. Had the knife in my hand and before I fell off, drove it with all my strength into the roof and hung on until my mom brought the ladder around. Only then did I see that it went through three layers of tar paper and the metal flashing under it. I had to re-tip it and there is a slight bend in the tip, but I will be buried with that knife.

Here is my Beretta lock blade. Has an old-school thumb-nut, before the days when it was integrated into the blade. In the pics you can see where I used a ceramic sharpener to lightly write my initials into the blade. When I bought it, my two buds at the time bought the same knife. Didn't want to get them mixed up.

I will post my other knives later, but this one is my favorite.

I will be posting my collectoin in smaller groups defined by purpose or brand. This particular group is made of blades given to me by my Uncle in the course of my career. Each of the M9 Bayonets represents a tour to Iraq. The MK3 blade came to me via a kindly supply NCO who received some via a clerical error and he needed to make them disappear so I happily assisted in the reallocation process. The M4 Bayonet is the only blade here that I have bought. It came as part of a package with a correct overhauled M1 carbine. The little four blade is by Camillus circa 1985. The Air Force 499 Survival Knife has been reshaped due to a broken tip in the summer of 1982. The machete gets used regularly in my feeble attempts to clear shooting lanes in the swamp that blankets two thirds of my land.

December 29, 2011, 06:57 PM
Here is a pic of a knife I gave my dad for Christmas. It was the best present I think I've ever given him, because it was also my first attempt at making a knife. My learnings, stumblings and pitfalls were well publicized on this forum as many THR'ers helped contribute to its making. I learned a lot...if nothing else, I learned to appreciate someone that can hand-craft a work of art! There is a Chinese proverb: "A craftsman should always teach his trade. At worst, he gains a colleague....most likely he gains a customer."

The knife on bottom is dad's knife. A2 tool steel, hickory handle. (Hickory is my favorite hard-wood)

The knife on top was my practice knife. When I bought the blank it was rusted and corroded. I restored it, affixed the handle, blued and sharpened it. Not exactly knife-making but it was a good start considering I had never done anything like this before.

Thanks to all that provided their advice and guidance. My first, probably not my last, but I'll definitely stick to my day job.

Der Stro, I have to say the Mora has been a gem to me. I got heavy blades to take out, but why? I can do mostly anything with the Mora, and not worry about the cost to replace....which I haven't had to worry about to begin with.

OH Spartan, man I love the top one! Nice gift for your Dad, and you should keep with it.

The Polkowski Kasper pug is just a great over all system for the enthusiast. Admittedly, a bit of a single purpose item, but well designed and made.

The Perrin/Spyderco is a super convenient, small EDC fixed blade.

The original recipe Phantom is even worse than the Polkowski, so far as single-mindedness goes, but it's such a wickedly cool blade; just a great example of the sort of work that put Allen on the map.

Thank you very much for the information. I've had a couple dozen blades picked up at gun shows, gun auctions, etc. that I haven't paid much attention to. Time to put some labels on them, age creeps on relentlessly.

I need a little help with this one, also.
The grip material appears to be horn with a spiral gripping groove cut into it.

It was the sight of JTW's John Lloyd at the top of this page that set me on a quest for such a beautiful knife. I finally acquired an amber stag knife this week, but I could not afford to have John make me one, having recently purchased a rosewood Shadow he made in October.

So, here is my Queen Mountain Man along with the Lloyd Shadow. Sorry for the photo quality, I just took them outside after the Queen arrived today, sat them on a stump from the wood pile and took a couple quick shots.

Todd, that knife you just posted looks like the most beautiful knife I've ever seen. Seriously, I don't know what inspired you on this one, but it's the bee's knees!

Todd, that is about the best I have seen from you, I like symmetry, and this has it all over. If that was done as a Copperhead type to sink the joint, it would be perfect.
I love the blade shape, the handle shape, the colors and form overall. Sweetness.
