THR and mobile technology

This might be a slightly off-topic post, but it is gun (or at least THR) related...
I'm considering buying a handheld PC. I was looking at the PocketPC type of systems. I was wondering if any of the THR members who own these devices have ever tried to browse this website (The High Road) with their Pocket PC.
If I were to purchase a handheld PC, could I use it to browse the contents of THR with the pocket version of Internet Explorer? Have any of you PocketPC owners tried to access THR with their handhelds?
Thanks,
IrvJr

Hardly a helpful comment but ... after a 21" tube and 1600 x 1200 res . I doubt my patience would stand anything much smaller ... well, a lap-top ... at a pinch!:D

Last Wednesday I just purchased the Ipaq 4150. I managed to check email and visit various websites so I'm sure you can go to THR. Whether it's the Pocket PC or the Palm, get one with the wireless lan (802.11b aka Wi-Fi) so you can surf while your out of you house.

I check THR every once in awhile from my Sharp Zaurus, while not a Windows based handheld it does fairly well. Since you're still looking make sure whatever one you get can resize the webpage you're trying to look at. Mine has two or three different "zoom" levels on it and it helps a bunch when going between different pages.

I wouldn't cruise THR on that dinky little screen...too cluttered and too much going on.
IrvJR, what cell phone plan are you on? If you have a notebook computer, plug a USB cable into your phone and use it as a modem. it burns up your minutes but you have free THR-access on nights and weekends, anywhere you get reception.

thanks for the input guys. I think i will go for an HP iPaq.
Skunk - I'll have a laptop already, but I would like to upgrade my PDA so I can more easily synch with my work e-mail and address book. I have an older palm pilot, and while it's a great machine, I can't use it to synch with my work address book or e-mail. I was just curious as to whether or not I could browse THR with the PDA (to get my THR fix on the road when my laptop is inaccesible or inconvenient).

Yes! Chris is right about 802.11b. Very convenient at times.http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?s=&postid=738529

I've done it with both PocketPC and Palms; I have bunch of each as my job involves writing and testing software for them.
For the PocketPC, you can either do it "live" or use AvantGo. It doesn't work great, but it does work. See AvantGo.com for details.
For Palms, even though AvantGo is also available, an application called "Plucker" works far better and is much faster. I find viewing THR and other sites (Slashdot, AOPA.org, etc.) to be a bit easier with the Palm due to the high screen resolution.
Either one will work; I'd recommend trying it out with your intended unit first to see which way works best for you.

I'm torn between the latest Zaurus and the latest iPaqs...

Thanks for the info folks. I knew I could rely on the THR members for advice.
I'm leaning towards one of the new HP iPaqs with the built in 802.11 support. I will, however, check out the AvantGo product - in case I want to download content and read it offline.
I like the Palm line of PDA's a lot (I've owned two different versions of the Palm Pilot and current am still using one of these Palm devices). However, I've always had problems synching my work e-mail and address books (which are Microsoft Outlook based) with the Palm OS systems. Even though I suspect Microsoft intentionally makes it difficult for Palm to stay integrated with Microsoft's products, I think I am going to make the switch to a PocketPC-based system. I also like the idea of having a mini version of Excel and MS Word to use on my handheld.

I have a Palm Tungsten C with WiFi. Works like a charm and yep, I've perused THR on occassion. It's small, and a little difficult to navigate, but serviceable.
IrvJr. - Look into Beyond Contacts if you must, but I've had little difficulty synching up with work goodies in MS Outlook.

I will have to try it out on my old Handspring Visor Pro.
All it is now is an expensive and glorified check book!
I would love to get a wireless LAN springboard for it, but I've only ever seen one from Zircom, and it's both expensive, and not very good from what I've read...

Kami, you can get 802.11 cards in CF format--they'll fit the CF slot in most of the newer PocketPC's. No "sled" required. Under $100.
Yes, I have browsed (and posted) from my PocketPC. A year ago November, I posted from the show floor of COMDEX (that was TFL, I believe). I was using a Sprint CF-2031 wireless data modem to connect over the cell infrastructure.
Its ugly, because THR does not "fit to screen".

You can also use hand helds to browse the web over GPRS on the GSM networks. You can also use RIM Blackberries to do this.

To ensure THR access during SHTF/TEOTWAWKI:

So what if your house burned down and you had to abandon your vehicle? The great 9mm vs .45 must be continued!

I have an iPaq 3765 sitting on my desk collecting dust. It's a novelty item for web browsing in my opinion. It works in a pinch, but if I'm using the 'net, I'll just bust out one of my laptops (usually my Titanium Powerbook). The screen is way too small for serious web browsing.

George, do they have a Microsoft OS and do they have phone and GPS capability? I forgot about those, my dad had one like 10 years ago.
