BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Birmingham police shot and killed a man who they say was brandishing a long-barreled gun.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Henry Irby says the shooting happened last night when two police officers responded to a disorderly conduct call at an apartment complex in Birmingham's West End neighborhood.

Irby says shots were fired after the man came out of a building carrying the gun. The two officers have not been identified and police did not say if one or both fired shots. The officers have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Police have not identified the dead man.
