I'm looking at doing a possible swap of an antique rifle for a more modern firearm with a friend. The antique in question is a 303 Savage model 1899 that was made in 1906 (according to a serial number search). The serial number is 65XXX. Here is a pic of the rifle in question. The simple problem is I don't know how much the Savage is worth and I want to be fair to my friend and of course myself. What do you think this rifle would be valued at? Thanks all,

Heath

Your gun appears to be a Model 1899B. In 90% condition, the Blue Book of Gun Values lists it at $750.00. At 80% $650.00, and at 70% $575.00.:)

Looks like it was a saddle gun by the wear on the stock. Know anything else about it?

Unfortunately no. It was my great uncles gun and he bought it new. I know he bear hunted with it at one pint but that's about it.

The .303 cartridge is still available, but pricey. I had a friend, since passed, who owned a later Model 99 in that caliber. It's now his son-in-laws in Indianapolis. The local Sporting Goods store in Pa., where he hunted, had sold him a box of .303 Enfield. This was back in the early 1980s. They are totally different cartridges.

Boy, have I been down that road, both ways. I saw a dealer sell a box of .303 Savage to a guy with a Savage-made Rifle No.4, and also got into an argument with another dealer when he tried to sell .303 British for a .303 Savage. That dealer actually became irate (to put it mildly) at me and the other customer; we both left and I certainly never went back.
