Hey all,

I'm trying to help a lady out by selling a few guns she was left by her late husband. He had a stroke in 1993 during a routine surgery and didn't pass away until last year. Most of the firearms are pretty simple to price, but I had some questions on this one.

Now, I know it was butchered but I would like to get her something out of it. Could anyone give me an idea of approximate value so I can help her out? Ser # in the 14xxx range.

Looking around at auctions at sporterized Krags I wouldn't say more than $400

Local market in central NY state for comparable hackjobs with iron sights seems to run about $200-250. They're quite common.

To a collector, the main value of this would be for parts (the action, the rear sight, etc.). It looks like the action, at least, hasn't been messed with.

This gun has been altered twice -- first by the government in upgrading it from the original M1892 specs, and then by the civilian sporterizing. An unaltered example, with the straight buttplate, the full-length cleaning rod, etc., is one of the "Holy Grails" of U.S. military collecting and is worth thousands. It's as rare and desirable as a rod-bayonet Springfield or a "gas-trap" Garand.
