Fitting cases to firearms & gear, whats the norm?

I picked up a Starlight double rifle case (more like quad rifle case, this thing is HUGE) today, and now I'm trying to figure out what I should put in the case. (In other words, share your experiences with what is good to have with the longguns, list of contents, methods of arrangement, etc.)

I'm currently thinking:
Top Layer: an Ar15A2 (no mounted accessories, just a rifle with sling) and a Mossberg 590A1.
Bottom layer: AR15A3 with scope (currently at the gunsmith and I dont have the scope yet) and a Bushmaster Super-light AR carbine (wearing a Rock River stubby stock, or a telestock after the AW sunset, do not have it yet).

What should I do for magazines? Should they get space in the case, or be carried seperately? Can I put anything in the foam on the lid of the case, or should that layer remain as one piece? Anything else I should make space for in the case?

The only time I carry mag-fed rifles in a hard case is when I'm flying. The mags ride in the case, as well.

Three AR’s, a Mossberg and the accessories for both (plus the weight of the case) is a pretty big handful, especially if the mags are loaded.

Personally, I’m a big fan of the “1-gun plus accessories per case” method, but I could be convinced to carry a pair of AR’s in the same case.

When I go to the range, I like being able to spread out. I’m anal-retentive about arranging the accessories “just-so” in the case, instead of cramming everything into a single package.

Personally, I’d go with the two or three AR’s in the Starlight, plus a soft-side case for the Mossberg. Mags and ammo in a range bag (ala Bagmaster, YMMV). Barbecue grill and cooler strapped to your back.

After fitting the A2 and the 590A1 into one level (with 2 30s, 2 20s and space for four 5rd sleeves of 12ga), I dont think I'll be able to fit the superlight on the same level as the A4 (the 590A1 and A2 were a very, very tight fit). I'll probably have the A4 alone on the bottom layer, I can always get more foam if my preferences for gear location change.

I keep my Benelli, some ammunition (about 20 buck and 15 slugs), eyes, ears and a cleaning kit. I leave it all in the bag so all my range and long gun tactical gear is in one bag. All the survival type stuff stays in the SHTF kit and all the defensive-only gear is on-person.
