Will there be a 2011?

You all know the Colt 1911 pistol and its enviable reputation of some 70+ years in the US Armed Forces.

My question is, since the Colt 1911 is practically 100 years old :uhoh: will there be another pistol design that will be as long lived and earn battlefield laurels to the extent that that storied pistol has? If so, does that pistol exist? What is it? If not, who will design and produce it? Remember, I said battlefield laurels. :)

I think one of the custom Colt-clone makers calls their pistol the "2011".

I'm sure that the 1911 fans will be quite happy with the 1911 being the 2011, also. :D

The STI modular widebody 1911-derivatives are called "2011" guns.

If there is money to be made from it, they will do it. I really don't think it will happen but what do I know. I should have bought Microsoft in 1983. I have heard that ancient Mayan calendars and calendars in the Pyramids stop at 2012. Maybe it won't matter. I'm not holding my breath!:D

Not a handgun but, I'm sure the Phased Plasma Rifle in 40 watt range will be as popular as the 1911 someday.;)

Personally, I don't see another handgun standing the test of time that the 1911 has.

Remember, I said battlefield laurels

We have yet to see what the streets of major US cities will look like in 40 years. Who knows, the Glock or SIG carried by LEO's might gain a "battlefield" reputation.

OK. I did not know there was a trademark called "2011." What I'm asking is is there something that will take over the next 100 years as the Colt 1911 did the twentieth century? Thanks!

Probably not, unless you want to get a couple more world wars going-space em apart by about 20 years and toss in a great depression in between them for good measure. That will take care of half a century, and the government is pretty slow to act on some stuff, so you can bet on coasting for another 30 years or so.

You cannot trademark a number but you can certainly make a number mean something. Think about 1903 and 1917. Both of these numbers denote different guns -- the 1903 Pistol and the 1903 rifle and the 1917 revolvers and the 1917 rifle.

I doubt it. The 1911 is the pistol that carried the US into superpower status.
Unless we have an intergalactic war with another sentient species, it's doubtful another pistol will surpass it.

I have heard that ancient Mayan calendars and calendars in the Pyramids stop at 2012. Maybe it won't matter.

I have heard that ancient computers build by wizened nerds stop at 1999, but here we are. :D

Will there be another gun of the 1911's status? Maybe. Who knows? Just when you say something can never happen it does. It will probably take a major breakthrough in pistol design though.

The 1911 ruled for 70 years as a military arm although its mostly fallen by the wayside now (except for the MEUSOC marines). Its still ruling in civilian life in the US. Although to be fair its domination is a bit overstated since I'm willing to bet there are far fewer people outside the US who use it.

The 1911 was and is a great design and made of all steel. Current crop of military pistols are made of aluminum and plastic, doubt they will be around and shooting in 70 years, but there are still original 1911's that are still shooting.

Maybe it will have some more improvments and be called the 1911-A2K :D

My favorite sig on THR. Whose sig line is that? I forget.

A 2011? Of course there's going to be a model 2011...you know there will be. It's just a question of how many are going to do it...

With any luck the 2011 will have NO GRIP SAFETY, no MIM parts and an external extractor.

Maybe they'll be able to do in 2011 what Browning was able to do in 1935.

Maybe they'll be able to do in 2011 what Browning was able to do in 1935.

What? Ruin the trigger, fatten the grip, and make it in an inferior caliber? Hasn't Para-Ord already done that with the LDA 18.9? :uhoh:

;) :D

Har har har :p

I'd like a HP with a 1911 trigger. That'd kick booty.

The HP trigger as is, is not bad though, I do alot better with it than most guns.

If Glock is the official sidearm of the coming American Police State, then I guess custom 1911s will be the official sidearm of the special response teams of the coming American Police State...;) :D

How about the Smith & Wesson Military & Police (AKA the Model 10). Been around in almost the same form since 1899 and still going strong. :)
