For the forearm:
Unscrew the mag cap (extension tube) Slide the bars abck about half way.
Remove the barrel. Slide the bars back out, you will need to release the catch on the inside of the reciever for it to come free.
There is a ring on the end of the Forearm that uncrews (there is a wench specially made for this, you don't need one) and the whole assembly can be taken apart.
What do i use instead of this tool/wrench?

Your standard 870 stock has a butt pad. Look at the but pad and you will notice two small holes. Stick a screwdriver in there and remove the pad.
Now you will see a large hole in the center of the stock. Stick a screwdriver in there and remove the stock.
For the forearm:
Unscrew the mag cap (extension tube) Slide the bars abck about half way.
Remove the barrel. Slide the bars back out, you will need to release the catch on the inside of the reciever for it to come free.

musky hunter, the screwdriver does not have to be long at all. For those first two screws (in the rubber but pad), you will need a #1 size phillips screwdriver. Those screws just hold the rubber but pad to the main stock.
Once you get the pad off, you will see the next screw. It's the main one that holds the stock to the receiver. You will need a large flat tip screw driver for that screw and, it's probably on very tight.
What kind of stock did you get? Some of the newer Remington's have different dimensions. It's possible that the Choate stock won't fit. If it doesn't, call Choate. I think they will send UPS out to your place for a pickup, make the modifications, and then send it back to you at their expense.

I think Musky Hunter's trying to take apart the forearm here.
I use a pair of needlenose pliers. Open the pliers to where the tips fit into the notches in the but and go carefully. It may be frozen in place by corrosion. Then, get the tool from Brownell's or make one from pipe.
Once the nut's off, the wood should slide right off the metal tube.

musky hunter, I have the Brownells fore arm tool if you want to borrow it. Just pay me for shipping costs to you (I'm in the U.S.) and, pay for shipping back. Let me know.
