ugaarguy July 31, 2011, 01:22 AM Dave,
You, sm, Lee Lapin, and a bunch of others whom I know I'm forgetting have written much here in THR's humble abode of the shotgun. You folks have extolled the virtues of gun fit, and I have paid attention. I found the factory walnut stock on my 870P to be too long for my short arms. A gunsmith friend gave me a Hogue cadet length overmolded buttstock left over from some work he'd done. That stock was a bit too short. There's about two inches difference in length of pull between the cadet and the factory 870 stock.
Luckily a man in his mid twenties, who's mastered the art of customizing shotgun stocks, works at one of the gun shops local to me. As you'll see below he's a true craftsman. He took an inch off of my factory 870 stock to put the length right between factory (too long), and the Hogue cadet (too short). He then did a wonderful job of fitting a Pachmayr Decelerator to the now shortened stock. The art of the shotgun is still alive Mr. Dave.

bikerdoc July 31, 2011, 10:04 AM UGAAGUY Let me echo your kudos to our resident scattergun experts.
mavracer July 31, 2011, 10:12 AM wow somebody in their mid 20s with attention to detail still exists. there may be hope yet. looks good
Dave McCracken July 31, 2011, 10:28 AM Thanks, my day is now improved. Nice job on the pad.
Re fit, minor LOP issues can be dealt with by moving the support hand fore and aft. More than say, an inch, though, surgery's oft the best answer. This seems to be the case here.
Do pattern. Reducing length also reduces drop, and this may print higher than it used to.
You will experience less "Kick". That's a good thing. The balance is also affected, but a few shots will find you adapting, I'm sure.
Enjoy.....

???
mavracer July 31, 2011, 12:06 PM sorry I'm a grouchy not that old factory worker who's tired of training 20 somethings with the attention span of a goldfish.

Will pattern soon. This 870P wears a 20" rifle sighted bbl, so I noticed the reduced drop in the sight picture. I used a pair of tin snips, and turned an empty soda can into some nice shims. The shims dropped the comb, and corrected the sight picture.
Milkmaster July 31, 2011, 03:13 PM It's OK Mavracer. I am right there with you.
Nice surgery on the stock UGAARGUY!
Nerostarr July 31, 2011, 09:06 PM Very nice job......Beautiful work!
Dave McCracken July 31, 2011, 10:31 PM Great, obviously you've read the old stuff we did here and on TFL about shimming.
Please post results of the first range outing. Thanks...
IDriveB5 August 1, 2011, 10:10 AM Looks like you got some nice work done, ugaarguy. Hope it works out for you.
Thought I might add a picture of my own, while we are on the subject. It's an old, poor quality snap-shot but the idea is there. I guess only being 22 at the time, my wandering attention span only was enough to get me through the project, and not the picture taking. The extra drop and length put everything right where I needed it. Naturally, the old threads served as inspiration for this project.

Dave McCracken August 1, 2011, 04:41 PM You're very welcome,B5.
Where have I seen that wood before?...
IDriveB5 August 2, 2011, 07:07 AM That'd be the 870 Classic Trap (#2).
Sister bought me a flat for Christmas, now we just need to get some time for our schedules to align so we can get to the "UU" part. Poor thing works more than I do.
See you around,
Dan
Dave McCracken August 2, 2011, 03:08 PM Soon, Dan, I hope.
Wait'll you see the new Wobble setup on Tange 4...
