All,

I found a very nice looking 6" Taurus 96 .22 LR the other day. Immaculate blued finish and the original walnut grips. Looks like it has maybe 100 rounds or so through it. Basically, these guns look just like a S&W K-22 from a short distance away (medium frame). The timing is spot on, the cylinder gap runs .005 and there is only about .001 worth of end shake. The DA trigger is S&W smooth.

Asking price is $270.

Problem: The rear sight assembly has a significant amount of horizontal play / wiggle in it. Very loose, the only thing that helped was tightening the top screw and cinching the sight assembly all the way down to the frame, but obviously this isn't a very practical solution. This seems to be a pretty common problem with adjustable sight Taurus revolvers from the research I've performed so far (another reason that I only buy Tauri face to face).

I've dealt with Tauri's "Customer DIS Service" Dept in the past. NEVER again. :banghead: So that is not an option.

One fix I read about was to cut a small piece out of a soda can and make a shim for either side of the revolver. What other methods might a regular guy like me use to fix this problem? Or might it be best to take it to a local smith?

To be clear, I have NOT purchased the gun. Saw it at a gun show yesterday, but the dealer is local. Chances are it will be sold by the end of today, but in case he still has it and a fix is possible I'll be GTG if I decide to purchase.

As I said, asking price is $270 (he knocked $30 off when I noted the loose rear sight). Fair or not?

Thank you!

cannot give you specific recommendation on home fix
(mine is not side-to-side loose)
but you can find rear sight assemblies from Numrich e-gunparts.com, leastways last time I looked, and a number of same vintage models (such as their model 66) used same sights

there is a teeny tiny coil spring under there that could easily get lost if taken apart ??
and.or the pivot pin that goes thru the side might could be undersized ??

me, I would jump all over it for that price
bought mine NIB 20-25 years ago, still a great gun after many thousands of rounds (more like 10s of thousands), runs head to head with my k-17s

good luck
