Since my dreams of an AR or AK are still about a year away, I'm probably going to get another pistol. I've got a slim budget, so of the choices in the poll, which would you choose and why?

This pistol will primarily be used for plinking at the range, and might pull double duty as a B.U.G.

S&W MODEL 22A/ .22LR semi auto
FIE Texan .22Magnum Revolver
ARSENAL MAKAROV 9MM
HI Standard R-101 3" 9 shot .22 LR revolver.

None cost more than $200, a couple substantially less.

All of these are used at my LGS.

I'd buy a stripped AR lower or two with that $200

Obama has announced forthcoming changes via Executive Order. The AR will be affected.

Or ignore that and buy the 22-A

Well, just heard back from the sales counter at my LGS, the 22Magnum and the Makarov are gone.

Too bad as I was leaning toward the 9mm Mak.

That leaves the two .22LR, one semi-auto S&W 22A, and the Hi Standard R-101.

I've got a slim budget

I would go with the S&W .22a

I've owed this gun before and have nothing but, good things to say about it. You can buy Federal bulk .22's in the neighborhood of $16 for 550 rounds or so.

9mm is $12 for a box of 50 in my neighborhood. .22 Magnums are the same price as 9mm so, the only way to go economical is with the .22lr

After a few range trips the savings do add up fast :D

S&W 22a comes with original box, manual and two mags (and a trigger lock).

Hi Standard R-101 comes with a trigger lock.

Went out this evening and shot both. Put the S&W on layaway with a 50% down payment.

I'm a little disappointed the Mak was sold. But that's life. I dig the 22, shoot it all day for less than $20.

even though they are $200 or less if your dream is an AR why not hold off on the handgun and put that $ toward your AR fund

IMO there's nothing more fun that a 22 handgun for plinking. It's cheap to shoot and you can shoot it all day long. I own a S&W M22A and it's accurate, not ammo brand sensitive, reliable and inexpensive. What's not to like?

Or rather than "settle" between pistols you don't really want, hold on to your money (and perhaps add to it incrementally) and keep your feelers down. Eventually something you know you want will be displayed for sale and you'll have to funds to snatch it up right then.

However, the S&W 22A sounds like a fun plinker and I'd have no issues spending under $200 for one.
