A rifle you have no use for?

August 7, 2011, 01:21 PM
Have you had the desire to buy a rifle that you have no use for?

I have the overwhelming desire to buy a something immense, a 338 Lapua at the top end or a 300 Remington Ultra at the bottom. The Remington Ultra is actually affordable.

I don't hunt and the closest 1000 yard range is hours from me. A 100 yard range is down the road....my road.

I have a press that can reload either, a Corbin swage press.

Yes. In fact right now I want to buy a 375 H&H. And one of those ruger 357 magnum bolt-actions. No use for either, but man, they're neat.

Yes, a new Win mod 70, Super Grade. I already have two in 300 WM.

August 7, 2011, 01:47 PM
I have several that I bought when in that demented state of mind; I am slowly regaining my balance by selling off, selectively, one at a time, slowly. After all I don't want to have the market crash, by releasing a flood!!

August 7, 2011, 01:47 PM
:uhoh: Probably half the rifles I've ever owned fall into that category......

August 7, 2011, 01:53 PM
yep I have plenty and I imagine plenty more will come :scrutiny:

August 7, 2011, 02:02 PM
I have the desire, but my desire to buy rifles I have use for, outweighs the desire to buy ones I have no use for.

I will say I have strong desires to buy rifles I have use for, but for which I already have plenty of rifles that already fill those niches.

I already have gobs of .22 LRs for squirrel hunting, but I want a few more CZ bolt actions in .22 LR
I already have a .22 WMR for groundhogs where I can't hunt with a centerfire, but I want a .17HMR....preferably CZ

I already have a .22-250 CZ Varmint for groundhogs, but I want a .204 Ruger in Remington VLS, and would like a .223 possibly CZ 527 and/or Remington SPS Varmint or Mossberg MVP

I already have a Winchester 94 30-30 for open woods/open sight deer hunting, but I would like a Winchester 92 and or Marlin 1894 in .45 Colt

I already have several scoped bolt actions in .30-06, .30-30 and 8x57 but I want a CZ 550 in 6.5x55, a Ruger M77 in 7mm-08, a Winchester M70 Supergrade in .270 Win a Tikka T3 Hunter in maybe .243 a T/C Icon Classic and a Weatherby Vanguard.

Sure, I'd like a .300 RUM, or a .338 Lapua, but I want all of that above even more.

I'd like a Winchester 1886 in .45-70 as well...at least I could use that for Whitetail as well, even if it is way overpower.

Ruger Scout Rifle.

August 7, 2011, 02:43 PM
My desires for rifles I have no use for actually stop at just that, luckily. I don't have the funds to go buying them, nor the time to sell them off when I come to my senses.

My latest mental pet project has been a suppressed, SBR'ed, gas-les AR-15 upper in .300BLK. The cost of the parts, shop tools I would need to modify them, reloading equipment, suppressor, and two tax stamps. . . . . At least it's a fun mental exercise.

Hello friends and neighbors // I'm looking at a BSA /Martini ,Military from 1886, no need at all just looks cool and has history.

My big problem are .22 rifles.
I can't pass on a good bargin, even bought a cracked stock, buldged barrel Remington 510 ...beacuse it was $25.00.
It does still shoot straight but the only thing nice is the walnut stock and it is cracked.

I have no idea how many .22s are in the safes but that won't stop me from buying another if the mood strikes and the price is right.
Same with BB guns no need for another but they keep popping up at yard sales.

August 7, 2011, 02:49 PM
I will go to Africa in the next few years but only for plains game. I still would REALLY like to have a nice .416Rigby boltgun and/or a Ruger #1 in .450/.400NE.

August 7, 2011, 03:05 PM
A LaRue 16" stealth AR with all the tacti-cool goodies I could load on it...makes me look cool at the range :)

August 7, 2011, 06:28 PM
A Ruger #1 in 9.3x74R

I might someday actually get a #1 International in 7x57 as that would be of real use in the Wisconsin woods. But for whatever reason, that old 9.3 strikes a chord with me.

August 7, 2011, 06:33 PM
Considering all I do with a rifle is target shoot, I guess the .22 bolt action I got as a kid takes care of that, and the six I've bought since are all extranious.

Well, the Mosin is vaguely a concrete history lesson. So there is that.

August 7, 2011, 07:07 PM
I keep trying and trying to find a good use for an AR. The dang things just don't do anything that I need a rifle to do. They are a pain to carry in the field and as far as home defense goes I've got better stuff to use.

Most of my rifles and shotguns.

I'm looking at a BSA /Martini ,Military from 1886
Have a longlever Martini 577-450 and a Martini Cadet. Both obsolete cartridges.
would REALLY like to have a nice .416Rigby
Yep, so did I. No plans to go to Africa, I picked up a .416 Rigby - a Ruger #1 Tropical .
No plans to hunt plains game or larger bears, I picked up a Model 70 in .375 H&H.
And so on...and on....
No use? What does that mean anyway?

August 7, 2011, 07:45 PM
I have no use for an AR of any caliber, as I have other rifles that I prefer to carry in the field, hunt with, and also prefer the ergonomics in general.

No real need for 5.56mm, come to think of it.

I always wanted to build a mid length AR for the wife, but she prefers other rifles as well.

August 7, 2011, 08:39 PM
I really want a double barrel 10 gauge shotgun. No need for it, but I want it. Old West style, with looooong barrels. Same reason why I want to put a bigger engine into my Mustang. I want it. Bigger is better.

I own several guns capable of being used in Africa for dangerous game...do I need them in Indiana? Well I am close to Peru Indiana which is known as the Circus Capital of the US and rogue elephants could break out....

several ak's.............

August 7, 2011, 11:08 PM
There isn't anything wrong with an AK..... Now my 2nd and 3rd Nagant is a different story....

August 7, 2011, 11:12 PM
I'm beginning to feel really bad for those of you with useless rifles and I'm going to help every single one of you. Just box them up and send them my way so they're no longer a burden to you. I'll pay the shipping.

August 7, 2011, 11:47 PM
No use for? I shoot all mine at the range, so I use them. Impractical? Yeah, an AK in 5.56 NATO when I already own two AR-15s.

I keep trying and trying to find a good use for an AR. The dang things just don't do anything that I need a rifle to do. They are a pain to carry in the field and as far as home defense goes I've got better stuff to use.
H&H, I have ideas for you on how to carry an AR. Having read many of your posts, I know you've been there, done that. For that reason, I'm curious as to what you consider better for HD. I know better is subjective, but I'm always open to reading reasoned opinions on why someone thinks something is better.

August 7, 2011, 11:54 PM
any caliber over a 30-06

August 8, 2011, 12:12 AM
What a silly question. I'm not sure I had an actual use for any of them. But i can't wait to buy the next one! And like you, I'm pretty sure .338 is in my future. It gives the wife something to bitch about.

August 8, 2011, 12:26 AM
Most rifles are at least somewhat interesting, but I don't have enough time or money to spend on the ones that I do have legitimate uses for. I can't see spending some of that money I don't have on a rifle I'd not even be able to use!

The Yugo Mauser 48A.

I prefer my other guns, and that's why it is for sale: FTF only ( in person) near Memphis.
It can be tried out at MSSA.

August 8, 2011, 07:37 AM
Ruger Scout.

August 8, 2011, 07:55 AM
yes, a pre-ban AK and a k31 also a few more Winchesters

August 8, 2011, 07:56 AM
Okay, so everyone needs:
1 .22LR rifle (I have 7, but use them all regularly)
1 Centerfire rifle (I have 4 and use them all at various times)
1 Shotgun (I have 3, but mostly use 1)
1 Handgun (I have 10 and use them all)

So what was the question? "Oh yeah, a rifle you have no use for." Well, I've gotten rid of maybe 50 rifles, over the 60 years of gun ownership, that I "didn't have much use for". Few are missed. Besides that, I've "ooogled" thousands of other rifles in gun shops, magazines, gun shows, and auctions, but not many followed me home. That's what being a "gun nut" is all about. :)

P.S. Most wives just don't understand.

Have you had the desire to buy a rifle that you have no use for?

Every day. Pistols too.

August 8, 2011, 08:16 AM
Most of the firearms I own !

August 8, 2011, 08:16 AM
P.S. Most wives just don't understand.

and we don't understand why they need 15 pairs of shoes or to change their pocket book every 3 months, or a pocket book for every outfit....so I guess it all evens out

BTW, I am not married

August 8, 2011, 10:46 AM
I have several rifles I bought to hunt with... and I don't like to hunt because I hate killing things and won't unless I have no other choice. I have these just in case I really need to hunt to survive. No, I'm not a prissy boy.

August 8, 2011, 11:34 AM
I really want a CZ 550 Safari Magnum in .375 H&H even though I have no plans of hunting dangerous game.

August 8, 2011, 12:02 PM
Rifles I own or have owned that I have no use for? Plenty. Bought a Savage in .243. Never shot it beyond 100 yards. Realized any benefit the .243 has over say a .223 is nothing at the distances I had the ability to shoot. Sold it. Had a few ARs that served no purpose. Bought a couple during the scare and settled for the first rifle(s) I could find rather than the style I wanted. Sold all of them. Also picked up a Service Rifle AR thinking I'd get into that. Again realized I don't have a place to shoot (now) past 200 yards and don't have the time or money to get competitive at the game. Sold that setup. I've got an old enfield that bubba put a scope on. Didn't understand the mount when I purchased the gun but it has a little play in it, making consistency on target tough. I've got a Mosin that never gets shot because its just not fun. Had an AK clone that just didn't do anything for me once it came home. I'm sure there are a few others I'm missing.

If you buy a Mosin Nagant you can just use it for the range if it works or its safe or just hang it.

August 8, 2011, 12:21 PM
I've got a couple of .22 rifles and a pellet gun for plinking plus a .30-30 for deer, and that's all I need. I've got a long list that I'd love to have and have no use for, so it's just as well that I can't afford them.

August 8, 2011, 07:44 PM
A .375 RUM along with numberous engine blocks for targets.

August 8, 2011, 07:49 PM

As much as I would love to own a 50bmg rifle, I know that I would hardly use it much. It would end up like all the others on the used market. For sale with less than 100 rounds through it, like new in box.

August 8, 2011, 08:43 PM
yep, i have always wanted a 375 H&H, and a 458 Lott. i will NEVER make it to africa, nor hunt big brown bears. but shooting them is always something i have wanted to do. and of course, there is my ultimate dream gun, a 375 H&H Holland and Holland double rifle. i would probably pass out at the opportunity just to shoot one, let alone actually own one.

August 8, 2011, 08:56 PM
I hunt in south Alabama where 100 yd shots are "long" I have a 270 WSM set up as a long range hunting rifle. No real need for 3400fps where a 30-30 is more then enough.

August 8, 2011, 11:31 PM
There are a number of them. The two I find myself wanting the most and continually coming back to but really don't know what I would do with them are:

A nice .375 H&H bolt gun

a .458 SOCOM AR, likely an SBR.

August 10, 2011, 11:53 AM
Almost any "black rifle" as I carried one in the Army and I don't need one at home. I do have a fair bunch and I still buy ones that duplicate what others will do, but it's often about a look and feel, the wood and the build. Last one was a 303 sportered Enfield which doesn't do anything that my 308 won't, but hey - I called out to me and it's fun to shoot :)

August 10, 2011, 12:02 PM
Think all of mine could go but one pistol, two shotguns and one AR. But I never sold one of the kids (crossed my mind a few times!) so I guess someone else will have to get rid of them when I go to the great range in the sky.

August 10, 2011, 12:19 PM
I found one I want but won't shoot.

August 10, 2011, 12:25 PM
So I was looking at the Savage in 338 Lapua. It's almost affordable. Adding the appropriate scope turns it into a car payment.

Also, I it is my understanding it actually doesn't shoot 338 Lapua....it shoot $20.00 bills.

Eh, I still want one...

The only rifle calibers I have are 5.56 and 7.62x39. I really ought to pick up something with a little power, say for example a .308 or 7.62 NATO...

At least that's what I keep telling myself while lusting over a M1A scout...

August 10, 2011, 03:30 PM
Zach... nothing at all wrong with a .308 (very versatile) but it's not a huge jump up from 7.62x39 whereas a .30-06 is a more substantial leap. Personally, I've been trying to decide which rifles to sell... either sell the .308 and keep the x39 and 06... or keep the .308 and sell the other two.
