Hi all:

I'm in Houston in the NW. I shoot at Memorial a lot and sometimes Shiloh and when its not hotter than the surface of the sun, I go to hot wells with the rifle. For bullseye competition, I go to the Addicks range of Bayou Rifles. I like Memorial, but a membership is just ridiculously expensive ($850/yr).

Are there any other indoor ranges I should know about, and any particularly near the NW area? It would be nice to find a range that allows lead and/or JHP and also allows one to keep their brass.

Thanks!

Yeah its got to be the most ridiculous membership fee. Family membership is $1750. They won't do quarters or half/year either. Yeah, I mean its air conditioned and everything which is great and I shoot a lot there so I might 'bite the bullet' :p and get one someday, but its by far the highest membership fee I have seen for ranges.

I wonder if that's higher than Scottsdale Gun club?? Mine is outdoors but it's not Texas hot up here in the Peolple's Republic ;-)

Not sure if Pruett built a range at his new location or not???

Others that I havent seen mentioned.

59 Gun Range
Top Gun
American Shooting Centers

Given your location it might be beneficial to check out Champion Firearms in Bryan/College Station.

might be worth the 1hr drive. I dont recall of the top of my head but I think its 300yr. 10 bucks day rate if not busy; if busy 1hr limit. (Ive never seen it packed) FYI - I dont go on the weekends.

No the sad part is it can take you that amount of time to reach the other locations I mentioned due to accidents, construction, traffic. :)

I used to drive from Blt 8 & 290 to B/CS everyday for 6yrs. I know how long it takes, course I also know where all the LEO hung out!

IIRC Top Gun's membership fee is ridiculous, like over $1000 per year. OTOH it is a flat $15 fee with no limit on the number of guns, and they'll let you shoot as long as you want if they aren't busy.

You could also try Spring Guns and Ammo up on Spring-Cypress near Kuykendahl. I haven't been there myself but a friend goes and thinks it's nice. You won't find many ranges on the NW side and I don't know of plans to build anymore. Someone mentioned Jim Pruett but that's probably a no-go, he has an arrangement with Hot Wells.

The memorial club is nice but for my money I just stick with Shiloh. It's no better or worse than any other place I've been and the prices are about the same as everyone else.

I doubt you could find an indoor place that allows anything other than brass cased FMJ. The brass is an extra revenue stream for them. And although I'm guessing on this one, I'd imagine that pure lead rounds cause environmental issues for the indoor ranges that they don't want to deal with.

I hear these prices and I shudder... Reminds me of the deer lease prices which I refuse to pay to hunt deer in Texas unless it be a guaranteed trophy hunt. I quit my membership at $200 per year (with no daily fees above the membership) at an indoor range about a mile from my house. I thought it too much and enjoy shooting outdoors much more. So, I'm a member of a private range which is under 5 miles from my house, but I still drive to a free range about 1.5 hours away from my house just because it is out in the woods and you're frequently alone or nearly alone shooting-not to mention I pass a good gunshop on the way there.

There is a relatively new range on Spring Cypress, east of 249. I haven't been yet but am planning to check it out.

Thanks guys, I will have to check out some of the ranges mentioned that I haven't been to. But sounds like overall I will probably stick with Memorial. Last time I went to Shiloh I literally couldn't park; every space was filled. Shiloh is a nice place, nice people, I have done 3 FFL purchases there, but since I shoot mostly bullseye, I need at least 20 yards to practice and the back range at Shiloh is quite short. I've been quite happy with Memorial, I just wish they would crank up the A/C a little more.

This is on the northeast side of town, Crosby, but it's almost brand new.

http://highnoongunrange.com/

Both hourly (walk-in) rates are available as well as a limited number of memberships.

I am not affiliated with this business in any way, shape or form and have not even shot there. I've only heard good things about it. And, if this heat doesn't break soon, I might start shooting there just for the A/C.

Everyone should go to the Pasadena gun center at least once to fire off one round of full house .357 magnum or your AR15 without hearing protection to see what it really would be like in the worst case scenario!
