i'm getting a lot of dirty blow back on my brass what could be causing this? i'm using 230grain lead home made hand casted bullets .45 LC REDDOT 5.5 GRAINS OF POWDER.... i;m mostly new to this so be gentle with me i want to load this up to the hottest i can get it and i'm guessing somewhere around 6.2.... is this too much powder for that small of a grain bullet? i also want to make some up with unique powder how hot do you think i can go with that.. my 2 manuales doesn't show loads for this bullet or powder mixture.. by the way i'm shooting a Judge Taurus and a bigboy Henry 45

Why are you using loads not mentioned in your reloading manuals?

CAUTION: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information. lyman lists for a 235 cast bullet #454309 maximum loads of Red Dot-7.0gr @830fps. Unique-10.7gr-1095fps. Your Red Dot load of 5.5gr is a starting load with low pressure, this will make it dirty. This can get you into trouble real fast> i want to load this up to the hottest i can get it Remember, different components=different pressures.

Really? I don't have data for Red Dot but for Clays it shows Hodgdon says 5.4gr is the max.
If your getting soot from the powder then I would say pressure is to low. Are you sure it isn't from the lube?

When someone just starting to reload comes to a site and tells the other members they are new to this and "i want to load this up to the hottest i can get it" - this is a recipe for disaster.
Firstly, you slowly work up a load, have you not read the instructions in many manuals telling you to slowly work up loads, constantly looking for signs of excessive pressure?
It sounds, by your post, that you have missed that part of the reading material, or you just don't think it matters -- as, all you are interested in is "loading it as hot as is possible!"
It is my opinion that, before you load ANYTHING, you should sit down with several concise reloading manuals that have all the instructions on how to reload in the beginning, before the reloading data. To just jump right in and "load as hot as I can" is like going to the local swimming pool, not knowing how to swim and jumping off the high-dive with no one around to help you when you are drowning.
There is "NO GUESSING" when it comes to reloading!
There are methods and rules for a reason, that is so nothing gets damaged and you can leave the shooting session on your own and not on a stretcher.

Hello Gentlemen
First of all i want to thank you all for the comments and suggestions (keep them coming). when i started reloading i bought RCBS single reloading press set up kit that came with a Speer manual and i also bought a Hornady manual separately. I was reloading with the direction of the Hornady manual with Hornady store bought bullets. but since then I bought a Lee 6 cavity mold to make my own boolets it's a 452 diameter 230 grain lead bullet and afterwards I was told that these bullets were for .45acp not LC .45 but could be used in colt .45LC shell casing.. And neither of my manuals are helping me out. On the vast information i can receive over the internet i decided to go this rout. I'm sorry if i offended anyone who thinks i'm don't take this hobby safely and seriously (I do and i have read both manuals and use both of for references all the time).... The phrase that i was quoted on (I want to load them as hot as i can get them ) was wrong worded from me (SORRY)... What I met to say was I need to know how hot I can load a lead casted 230 grain bullet with these 2 powders with out getting in to any trouble and find out why my shell casings are getting all sooted up... from day to day I write in my diary of what load i used and what gun i shot them out of and then slowly i'll work my way from there to find the best shooting loads that accommodates my gun and me. So i guess more manual are going to be needed on my half
@kingmt i am almost positive it's not from the lube and it seems the soot only came from the Reddot only and not the Unique. I loaded 10 of each reddot at 5.3/5.5 and unique at 6.0/6.3 grains
more comments and suggestions are welcome... THANKS!!!

Real simple solution. Get a Lyman Cast Bullet Manual, it'll give you all the info you'll need for reloading cast bullets.

Not offended. Hope your not.:) Red Dot is just a dirty powder, even in shotguns. Get a free Alliant Reloaders Guide here> http://www.alliantpowder.com/resources/catalog.aspx It will NOT have load data for a 230gr L bullet. Red Dot is a very fast burning powder.

chriscokid,
Get used to the soot on your cases when loading low power loads for the .45 Colt. Nothing wrong with it, and won't hurt a thing. Bumping that Red Dot load up to 6.5 - 7.0gr will help though.

No problem, no offense.
Thank you for clarifying that!
