I have a question about loading 9mm rounds with 124 gr cast bullets and Power Pistol powder.

I am currently loading these with 4.7 gr of Unique. It pretty much fills the case and the bullet compresses the load.
I am looking to purchase some Power pistol powder, and the starting load is 5.1 per my Lyman's 49th, ed manual.
I am thinking that 5.1 is going to really over fill the case on the 9mm.

Does power pistol fill less than unique?
My lyman's book says they are both wafer powders, dual based.

It's probably a denser powder. Usually higher the grain count means a slower burning powder.

Unique is a very high volume powder for it's weight. Lee lists the .49 cc hole in their measurer as dropping 4.5 grains of Unique vs 5.5 grains of Power Pistol. Those numbers are usually wrong, but the relation should be close. The 4.7 of Unique that fills your case would be closer to 5.7-5.8 of PP.

I use PowerPistol for my jacketed loads in 9mm and use 6.5 grs. for 124 gr. JHP's with no problems. That pushs them pretty hot and I would not reccomend using that for cast lead bullets, as you will probably get a lot of leading in your barrel, but the 9mm case will hold that much Power-Pistol for that bullet weight. In the Hornady manual using Power Pistol the Hornady swagded lead 124 gr. RN bullet it list a starting load of 4.3 grs. 900 fps. and a Max. load of 5.7 grs. 1100 fps.

I've found that a load of about 5.0 grs. is a nice shooting load with 125 gr. hard cast bullets in my 9.

Power Pistol was made specifically for the 9mm.

Using Lee's VMD
Power Pist = .0889 cc/grain
Unique = .1092 cc/grain
Your 4.7g load of Unique occupies .513cc of space in the case and that same exact space would take 5.77g of Power Pistol

I used to use Power Pistol in 9mm - 5.4g with 124g FMJ bullets. (I don't use lead bullets in my 9s.) It did NOT fill the case, and gave me about 1050fps, which was fast enough for IDPA matches. It is a VERY exciting powder to use at a night shoot.

Not as exciting as Blue Dot.

I use 5.5 gr PP with 122 gr TC cast bullets @ 1.055" OAL for 1190 fps from my 5" 1911. Fine load, accurate. PP does not fill the case at this level.

5.1 grains of Power Pistol will not fill a 9mm case.
