Well, I was channel surfing last night (have hundreds of channels and there is never anything on)

Anyway, I was surfing and came by something interesting. It was
an episode of All in the Family, and was aired in 1971. In this
program due too high crime rates Archie Bunker, decides it's
time to buy a handgun for home defense.

I don't care for the show but, had to watch it to see what he
would get. Yes, that's what being a gun enthusiast is all
about :D I was expecting to see something like a S&W
model 36 Chief's Special but...

It was a WW2 German Luger

Won't comment on the rest of the show as it went downhill from
there and became a real anti gun message as the thieves found
his firearm first and used it to hold everyone up in the house.

Yeah the old "thieves will take the gun away from you" or "your more likely to shoot a family member" scenario played for laughs. Had something similar on an episode of Family Ties

It was probably Meathead's fault

Married with Children had Al buying a gun, and I almost turned it off because I do not want that show ruined for me.

Of course Marcy and the women objected IIRC, but the men thought it was fine. Al ended up accidentally shooting Marcy's dog that he thought was a thief, and Marcy I think made him take it, or something to that effect. Almost no political undertones one way or another. It was nice to have that for once.

I hate the anti-gun theme that usually surfaces in any show that goes with the "buy a gun" script.

I have some members of my extended family that think like that: If I own a gun, the following will happen:

1) It will be used against me.
2) I'll kill myself with it.
3) I'll kill my spouse with it.

Ahhh... the infamous mind-controlling Glock 7, which incidentally is made out of porcelain, and can't be detected by airport security screening. Idiots.

They were going to do an episode of "Seinfeld" called "The Bet" that involved Elaine buying a handgun illegally, but it got axed after the cast couldn't make the material work. In interviews the writer said it's too difficult to make guns funny. I immediately thought of the classic Zucker brothers TV show "Police Squad! (in color)" or any number of Pink Panther movies ("This is my pistol pen. Get your own pistol pen"). But I think the Seinfeld episode highlights the mind block 99% of Hollywood writers and actors have against anything but a negative portrayal of firearms.

Homer buying a gun... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIpLd0WQKCY) although terribly biased, I found it to be the only episode of The Simpsons that I can stomach. I think it's funny.

Titus had the same gag, wherein the burglar finds Erin's nightstand pistol and uses it to hold everyone hostage. My eyes rolled so hard, I could see the back of my head.

Homer buying a gun...
Ah yes...The Cartridge Family episode!
Hey, if you can't laugh at yourself...

I actually once had a chance to use a line from the episode.
I was engaged with some lighthearted negotiating with the local gun shop owner (being the cheap SOB I am, he knew I was never going to buy the pricey item), when he jokingly threw in the I wouldn't think you'd put a price on your safety line.
I replied yeah, you wouldn't think so, but here we are!

Hollywood and the media are generally anti gun.

In other news, the sun rose today, expected to rise again tomorrow :)

Fictional TV shows are barely on topic and then only when there is significant gun content (24 and Firefly are examples that have had long threads here).
