Ok. I went into my local shop to day and decided I was going to leave with a used but very nice Kimber Compact today.
After making the deal i handed the clerk my license and my pistol permit since my license has my old address on it.
Now, for the past three years I have been buying guns from this place this hasnt been a problem. However he told me that he law had just changed and that the correct address must be on my license and that NO OTHER FOR OF ID WILL BE ACCEPTED.
My question to you is this...is this true? I have never heard of this before. Is this just an Alabama law or did they change things at the federal level?
Either way I am gonna have to go down to the courthouse and get a new license made, theres $25 down the tubes, and then go back and do the deal.

It is true. At least in Texas it is.

I had a similar problem one time and had to go get my license changed before I could pick up my gun.

I've had the wrong address on my license with many gun purchases, never had a problem. I don't understand the address thing when it's a picture I.D.

I guess it's so they have the right address when they come to round up your guns. :uhoh:

Most states require that legal forms of identification (license, etc) be changed to a new address/name within a set amount of time after the change occurs. So, yeah, I'd say it's time to do this - unless this purchase and future ones aren't orth that whopping $25.

I had the same problem this past December.

I went in to buy a Ruger Single Six. I handed my DL and Handgun Carry Permit to the dealer. As I start to fill-out the 4473, he asks if the information on my DL is correct. I say no, as I've recently moved, but I changed my address with the State online as is allowed under TN law.

The dealer says that he can't accept the DL as ID due to the descrepency even though I have changed my address in the system and I have a HCP.

Luckily, for the dealer, he sends me down the street to the local DL office. In 15 minutes I have a new DL with my correct address even though I did not need to show any proof that I actually live at the address. Furthermore, that office does not reissue carry permits even though the State says that the carry permit can be changed/reissued at any office.

After an hour of fooling around I finally left with my new Ruger.

Well, yeah, but it says so right in the Second Amendment... doesn't it?

I think he meant that he didn't need to show any proof of adddres to get the drivers license, not that he didn't need to show proof of address to get the gun.

It always amazed me how they try to prevent you from doing all these "bad" things by requiring your drivers license, but then make it easy to get a drivers license.

When I was in college there were several ways an underage type could get a fake ID that let him hit the bars. You could do manual alterations to your drivers license, you could sit for the picture with one of the residence hall's artists, or you could convince one of your older classmates to give you his personal info, and you would wander into the DL office and apply for a replacement ID for him. 30 minutes and you have a very professionally made fake ID. The government being the government, it never seemed to notice how often some folks lost their license.

Anyone who was real serious about avoiding the FFL check could do the same thing now, though digitization has made it a little harder, and presumably you'd need to do a little identity theft. Still proves the same thing all gun laws prove, they only really apply to the law abiding types.

I investigated a check forgery scam which used payroll checks from a defunct company that were obtained from a storage unit sale. The principal suspect was a young lady who loaned her drivers license to an underage friend. Friend went to the Department of Motor Vehicles and said she lost her license, but remembered her license number. Friend got brand new ID in young lady/principal suspect's name but with her picture on it.

Friend then proceeded to cash several thousands of dollars of bogus payroll checks in three counties. Innocent young lady was very embarrassed in front of her parents and neighbors when all these cop cars showed up at her door step and officers read to her the Miranda rights admonition. She thought surely she was going to jail.

Word to the wise.

NO OTHER FOR OF ID WILL BE ACCEPTED. Since when does a DL trump a passport? Maybe because a passport doesn't contain your address?

This is true. At Wal-Mart, when I bought my 870, the gun guru there (I call him that because he seems to reload nearly every rifle caliber in existence :) ) warned me about it. I live in an apartment to go to college, but he said that I should put down my home address (i.e. house that I live in when not going to college) down as this was what I had on my driver's license.

Some FFLs don't care. When I got my SAR-1 from M&C Army Surplus, they didn't even ask. I always put my social security number on my 4473s - easier to identify me as me, and social security numbers aren't that private anymore, anyway.

A wierd thing here in FL is that you must keep the address on your license up-to-date but they could care less about the address on the CCW license. I did have to call in to notify them of my move but it was $15 to get an updated license reflecting the new address. They can keep the new one for all I care.

The Jersey 3 step:

1) Present Ancient driver's license with picture on it, and address from 3 or 4 residences ago. (Although it's changing this year, NJ simply mails you a laminated paper renewal license without a picture once you're past 30)

Say to FFL: "This establishes who I am."

2) Present current photoless driver's license.

Say to FFL: "This is my current driver's license with my current address. Note that the names, physical descriptions, and driver's license numbers all match."

3) Present current photoless Firearms ID Card.

Say to FFL: "This is my current FID. Note that the names and addresses all match my current driver's license, and that the address on my FID is current."

The responses vary:

Jersey FFL: "Sure, no problem, happens all the time."

Any other FFL: "Huh? You trying to pull a fastone? {thinks about it} Oh, waitaminute I getit. Sorry. "
