Which brand of ammo do you prefer?

August 30, 2011, 11:20 PM
Im not sure what catagory to place this under but I guess factory ammo falls into acssesories.

Anyway Whay brand of self defense ammo do you prefer out of the following Winchester ranger t series, federal HST, Federal Hydroshok, Speer gold dot, Hornady XTP or other. I prefer winchester ranger myself but I figured id take another look at ammo selection and see what you guys have to say.

I generally like the Buffalo Bore stuff, in no small part because they list their velocities from various barrel lengths (standard pressure 38 spl velocities are meaningless to me if measured from a 6-8" barrel, and since the wifey "borrowed" my Kel Tec, I almost exclusively carry my old 49). The Kel Tec is the only exception, which is kept full of white box JTC's.

I've never been a fan of the Hydra-shock because of all the goofy hype over the useless center post. Cutting out the post does nothing to change the expansion characteristics of the round and it's nothing but a marketing ploy for the masses who don't know any better. Having said that, my 40 is currently loaded with Hydra-shocks simply because it's the only premium defense round I have in that caliber. My preference runs to the Winchester Ranger T-series but, the reality is, there isn't a whole lot lot difference in the performance of modern defense rounds from any credible manufacture. The only one I strictly avoid is the Winchester Silver-Tip in .44 Special as I found it to be so lightly loaded it barely made 700 fps on my chronograph.

Federal HST followed closely by Winchester Ranger T. With regard to the latter, I'm not buying ANY Winchester ammo at this time due to their long-running QC issues.

So far I am the only one to pick Hornady, but everybody gets to pick what they like. I don't have anything bad to say about any of the ones you listed, but when I do buy ammo (usually reload) it always seems that Hornady gets my money.

357 Terms
August 31, 2011, 04:00 PM
I voted "other"..my carry 357's have Barnes XPB's in them ( 140grn in my 4in Service six and 125grn in my DAO 2.25 sp101) my .40 3.8 XDm has 155grn Gold Dot (handloads) and my 1911 has Remington 230hp's (handloads) Those are for SD. All my hunting hp's are Hornady XTP,357,454 300grn mag (45 Colt) all handloads.

August 31, 2011, 04:11 PM
I use Speer Gold Dots the most, followed by Hornady TAP (XTP). Hornady is very very accurate and gives you more penetration than most hollow points.

August 31, 2011, 04:18 PM
for factory stuff i prefer gold dots. for my reloads though, i prefer the hornady XTP as they are some of the most accurate loads i have shot through my pistol.

August 31, 2011, 04:22 PM
I like the T-Series in most of my common calibres. .45, .40, and 9mm. I don't like loading +P and .40 for carry. Don't like pushing the envelope with high pressure rounds (save one).

For the 10mm, I load them all. I prefer the XTP in this one, it comes in weights up to 200gr. and is SOOO accurate!

August 31, 2011, 04:24 PM
I use different makes for different guns. In my 9mm guns , I like Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P and in my 38 special Ruger LCR I use the Speer GD 135 gr. In my pocket 380, I use 102gr Remington Golden Saber. In my Colt Magnum carry 6 shot 357 mag, I use Hornady Critical defense 125gr.

August 31, 2011, 04:55 PM
Hornady XTP....My SIL works for them....free is always better!!!!

August 31, 2011, 05:24 PM
Buffalo Bore

August 31, 2011, 05:37 PM
I reload all my ammo and for SDA I use hornady xtp bullets.
Winchester primmers and brass.
Have not bought factory ammo for almost 30 years. Shotgun I have to buy as I do not reload for scatter guns.

Other...........Black Hills

August 31, 2011, 06:10 PM
I prefer speer gold dot, but more important than that to me is what is locally available. Yes I buy online sometimes, but I want whatever I buy online to ALSO be locally available.

August 31, 2011, 06:19 PM
My Walthers, be they in .32, .380, or 9mm, love Speer Gold Dots.

August 31, 2011, 06:33 PM
Depends on the caliber.
Winchester, Hornady, Federal, Corbon, Magsafe.

August 31, 2011, 07:10 PM
Other: I make m own.

August 31, 2011, 07:16 PM
What brand of AMMO= HST
what brand of BULLET=XTP, that is untill they make a 10mm HST round

Hornady loads most of their handgun stuff a bit light for my taste.

DC Plumber
August 31, 2011, 07:56 PM
I like GDJHP and JHPXTPs equally. I burn up my ammo regularly, so which ever one is available, that's what I use.

August 31, 2011, 07:57 PM
.40/9mm Winchester PDX1
.44/.454 Corbon Hunter 320/360 GR

August 31, 2011, 08:03 PM
Depends on the gun....

My 2 .357 Rugers like the Speer 158-Gr "Gold Dot"

My .45's like the Rem 230-Gr "Golden Sabre"

My cheapy DA .38-Spl is best with the Federal 110-Gr "Personal Defense" (NOT the +p stuff)

Buffalo Bore is the best for everything.

September 1, 2011, 11:12 AM
I don't know. They are using what looks like Montana Gold bullets in their
125 gr 357 load. I don't know about this bullet for SD.

September 1, 2011, 12:08 PM
The best factory ammo i've ever fired was made right on the CO-AX press in the pict.,

And as i had an ammo mfg. license when i made it, i can pick "other" on your post and still be on topic. lol

September 1, 2011, 12:28 PM
:)I typically use Winchester or Blackhills brands on avg. otherwise I use PPU/ or your typical russian made stuff for mosin's, yugo M57's, and AK's. I do use the Winchester PDX1 "Bonded" ammo for home and CHL protection.

September 2, 2011, 11:23 AM
Every choice on the list would be more than acceptable to me, depending on the caliber. I'd probably add a few others as well.

September 2, 2011, 05:04 PM
I end up buying Gold Dot, when I do, simply because we have it here. Although I think last time I got some Hornady ... I really don't sweat the brandname though, so I didn't vote. 8)

September 2, 2011, 08:19 PM
I voted Winchester Ranger-T as that is what I use most often, but I don't believe in "magic" bullets and use whatever of the major brands are "on-sale" when I need more.

The 50 round Ranger-T are usually easy to find at gun shows here at hard to beat prices as far as "premium" JHP goes.

For practice I shoot mostly my reloads or Wolf -- "Quantity has a quality of its very own" :)

September 3, 2011, 08:47 AM
I've been all over the map on this and have finally gravitated to the whatever-is-cheapest non category.

September 3, 2011, 09:37 AM
Roll my own...My .357's are stoked with 125 gr JHP's from the now defunct National Bullet Company.

September 3, 2011, 07:50 PM
I'm all over the place, but prefer Speer Gold Dots (if I can find them).

In .380 (Hornady Critical Defense)
In .38 SPL (Speer Gold Dot - Short Barrel)
In 9mm (Speer Gold Dot)
In .40 S&W (Federal HST)
In .45 (Winchester Rangers)

September 4, 2011, 07:32 AM
I voted Hydra shok because that is what i have shot the most. However, do not think you can go wrong with any of the poll choices.

September 10, 2011, 07:44 PM
I carry Winchester T series. At work we do Winchester also.

I'm also fond of Fiocchi XTPs, a bit hotter then most . But not the mighty Buffalo!

September 10, 2011, 08:12 PM
But then I am old skool and don't know better...

First off the gun has to run and with every mag with ammo.

Second, most mfg's have designed a gun to work with certain AND many are sighted in to work with a specific bullet weight and other criteria.

Third, and gets back to reason number two, a gun needs to shoot point of aim/point of impact [POA/POI] with ammo.

Fourth, and this often comes into play with injury, or age, with situations such as Arthritis, a person needs to be able to quickly and effectivley make hits. Meaning if they used to could shoot 158 grain .357s, but their situations have changed, and in "investigating and verifying" on paper, with five rounds at five yards they shoot .38spls, even target wadcutters best, that is the load for them at that time.

Hence the reason this dumb ole southern boy still prefers 158 grainers out of dedicated .38spls and .357s for instance...

So for me, the brand is not as important as the other criteria I just posted.

September 11, 2011, 04:55 PM
Hornady critical defense. So, other.

September 11, 2011, 07:33 PM
Winchester PDX1 40/ 9mm
Hornady Critical defense 357 Magnum

September 12, 2011, 03:44 PM
Speer GD, Federal HS and Hornady CD, in that order.

September 12, 2011, 03:53 PM
Winchester PDX1 (9mm 124 grain +P)

It works in all my carry guns, performs very well ballistically, is widely available in stores and is not too expensive.

September 13, 2011, 11:30 AM
WWB 230 grain FMJ and JHP for my 1911 and Ruger P90. Works everytime.
