It Could Have Easily Gone Like This...

and the world would have been forever different. What would have happened if...

1. The Persians defeated the Greeks in 480 B.C. and prevented the establishment of Greek culture and it's unique concepts of government? The Eastern powers did not even have words that were equivalent to the greek words "freredom" and "citizen."

2. Christ was spared the crucifixtion? What if Pontius Pilate followed his personal intuition and not the will of the crowd? What if Jesus was released and lived to old age?

3. Gengis Kahn had not died in 1242 and the Mongol hordes continued their advance into Europe? They were within eyesight of Vienna when they got the news and returned for his funeral.

4. China discovered the New World? China under the Ming Dynasty had the most advanced Navy in the world. They had the means to make the successful voyage by the mid 1400s but expeditions were scaled back due to worries of internal security.

5. Hitler had not violated his non aggression pact with Russia in 1940? England would have eventually lost their war of attrition. The Allied forces would have been forced to seek terms with the Nazis. Hitler and Stalin would control much of the world with Hitler as the dominant force.

6. Lord Halifax negotiated with Rudolf Hess and England made peace with Germany in 1940? Hitler would have been free and able to concentrate on the Russian invasion with all his resources.

7. Japan did not attack Pearl Harbor? Without provocation, would the US had entered the war? What if Japan sought raw material from her Axis partners?

8. D-Day failed? What if allied forces stalled on the beaches in 1944 and failed to breach the Atlantic Wall?

9. If Chiang Kai Shek defeated the communist forces under Mao? Without the brutal cultural revolution, would China today be a major industrial/economic superpower?

10. The Cuban Missle Crisis went hot? What if there was a limited nuclear excahange?

Anyway, that is MY top ten of things that could have gone the other way.

I'm sure Stalin would have invaded western Europe, either in 1940 or at a later, more favourable, date.

If you enjoy pondering questions like this, take a look at Harry Turtledove's novels on 'alternative history'. Subjects include the American civil war and WW1 and 2. I read "Guns of the South" awhile back; very interesting read, and his world war books will keep you guessing.

Lesse...my "favorite": if the US Supreme Court hadn't gutted the 14th Amendment between 1872 and 1900. The entire "Civil Rights Movement" should have happened almost 100 years earlier; we'd have had a much better society and FAR less gun control. In fact, we'd have had less violence than Europe with close to no gun control at all, which might have influenced them and the rest of the world in very positive ways.

Instead, the Supremes pulled crap like Cruikshank :cuss:.

What if a stray bomb hit Heckler OR Koch?

What you might not know is the factory WAS destroyed during WW2. But back then Heckler & Koch was known as Mauser. The Mauser factory in Oberdorf Germany was almost completely destroyed by bombing.

At the end of the war arms production was banned in Germany. Mauser engineers took their latest prototype rifle the Stg45 (not to be confused with the production Stuhrmgewer MP 44/45 Stg44/45) to Spain for development. This Mauser rifle used a roller lock bolt based upon a Polish prototype captured in the war. While in Spain the Mauser engineers eventually produced this rifle as the CETME.

Meanwhile back in Germany, key Mauser people opened the Heckler & Koch factory on the reamins of the original Mauser sight and made sewing machines. Reason being is sewing machines require similar machinery and production methods as firearms.

When arms production resumed in Germany, H&K quickly converted to arms prodcution and refined the CETME into what would become the HK G3 rifle. The semi auto verson of the G3 is the HK91. Mauser built a new factory down the street from the old location.

SteyrAUG,

Funny you should mention the sewing machine issue.

My father came over on the boat from Germany.

One of his jokes that was about Germany between the World Wars.

Fritz was working at a sewing machine factory. He used to steal parts and assemble them at home and sell the machines for money.

After the new chancellor came to power, a Herr Hitler, the company started makeing a new sewing machine.

Now when Fritz assembled the parts, no matter how he tried they always came out looking like a MG-34!

Oh yea.

...the Celts had remained a power in Europe?
...no one had ever thought of cramming gunpowder and a projectile down a tube and setting it off?
...smokeless powder had never been invented?
...the machine gun had never been invented?
...the proportions of gold and lead in the world were reversed?
...antibiotics had never been developed?
..."lie detectors" really worked and could not be fooled or their results tampered with? The LD as we know it has been around since the 1920's.
... Germany and/or Japan had developed (http://www.cccoe.k12.ca.us/abomb/race.htm) an atomic bomb during WWII?
...the internal combustion engine had never been developed?

Century Arms really could (re)produce a great MBR for $300 known as the CETME.

What if the prices of CMP Garands went down to $165ea like in the 80's.

What if M1A's suddenly dropped in price by half.

What if our Gov. started handing out arms and ammo like somewhere I can't think of.

What if there was an ammo producer like DeBeers is for diamonds and suddenly flooded the market with .308 surplus for $50/k rds.

And finally, what if personal responsibility reigned supreme and frivilous lawsuits all resulted in countersuit.

A V2 rocket makes a lucky hit, and the Battle of Britain goes the other way?

Hmmm....and since my Mom is English, and Dad is from Texas, perhaps they never meet, either.
