7mmRM downloaded to 7mm08 velocities?

Looking to push a 140gr bullet at a pedestrian 2800fps from a 24" barrel, vs. the ~3150fps most factory 7RM hunting loads with that weight bullet seem to have.

I see no need to beat up my shoulder with magnum recoil for hunting whitetail inside 300yd...but its nice to have the ability to up-load the rifle for larger game/longer range shots if so desired.

Hodgdon shows a "minimum" load of 61.0gr H4831 providing about 2850fps with a 140gr bullet, which should be fine for my purposes...but I'm curious if anybody else has a pet load or another powder recommendation.

I'm aware of Remington's "Managed Recoil" ammo but that doesn't interest me...and Hodgdon's published reduced loads with H4895 are a bit slower than I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Lyman #49 shows 9 starting load powders with a 140 grain in that velocity range.

I might pick IMR-4350 for a place to start experminting.
It will take a little less of it to get where you want to be.
And that will translate to slightly less muzzle blast too.

Be careful downloading a magnum cartridge, they usually perform best with max or near max charges. Low charge weights of slow burning powders can cause hangfires.

Be careful and follow all safe reloading practices.

Published Starting loads from reputable reloading manuals are safe.

Just don't go below that!

61.0 grns of IMR4831 with a 150 Nosler ballitic tip, around 3000 fps in a 24 inch barrel, its very a mild recoil load and shoots sub moa in the several rifles I have tried it in, which include Rem 700, Savage 110, Weatherby Vanguard,Ruger M77 and Browning A-bolt. To me it seems to be very managible recoil in a 7 or 8 lbs. rifle.

You might also drop to 130gr or even 120gr. Maybe something like 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. BC is 0.417 and at 3000fps start load still shoots very flat (+/- 3.5") out to 300 yards when sighted 3" high at 100 yards. Even out to 500 yards it's still going >1900 fps (above Nosler's recommneded minimum) and has >1000 fpe.

When you want reduced velocity from your 7mm Rem Mag I would not use a slow burning powders such as IMR 4831. For reduced velocities try IMR-4895 or IMR-3031 - both worked well for me.
