I borrowed my buddies Marlin today to take to the range (the yearning to shoot a 45/70 had become much too strong :-P), but it seems that neither one of us knows how to strip it for cleaning! he hasn't shot it since he got it (it was his dad's rifle), and there's no manual. can anyone point me in the right direction?

My Marlin 336 is easy. I Just remove the screw that holds the lever in and then pull it out down and forward like I'm cycling the action. The bolt will catch on the hammer so I have to hold the hammer back to pull the bolt. I pull the bolt out the back and make sure the ejector/spring assembly doesn't get lost. Being careful to never pull the trigger.

If you try this don't give in to the temptation to unscrew any of the other screws unless it is just far enough to put some loctite on them. I spent two hours putting mine back together once when I took it all apart. It was really dirty, so maybe I'll do it again in 20 more years.

The principle should be the same whichever rifle it is, but to be sure you might want to get a manual before you end up with gun parts all over the kitchen table. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/FAQs/index.php#Q02

BTW, it might help to get a spare ejector/spring assembly. The tip gradually wears off until there is just a nub.

Good. I take it you didn't lose the ejector/spring assembly. Slippery little bugger, about like a little paper clip except more expensive! :D
