FMF Doc September 10, 2011, 07:13 PM I had a chance to put about 400 rounds through a Ruger LC9 that a buddy of mine owns. I am rather impressed with the gun, all things considered. I will be picking one up to replace my .380ACP as my CCW. I am looking for a larger pistol to pair with it in the future. It does not have to necessarily be 9mm but that would be a bonus. This pistol will serve many roles. Home defense, so it must have a rail for light attachment. Truck gun in the glove box for my frequent long trips and often overnighters. Fall/winter carry piece, becuase more and/or bigger rounds is always better and a plus when shooting attackers wearing lots of cold weather clothes. Depending, it may also be a "woods walking" gun, or a "PPP" for those in the know, though I would also consider a pistol for just that purpose. I am familiar with Glock, Sig and Beretta platforms, and while I can save up for it for a while, I can not really afford to go and spend $1000+ on a Wilson Combat Special or anything else crazy. Any suggestions?

MedWheeler September 10, 2011, 08:41 PM Ruger P-95? If you like the Ruger name... Truth is, the options are almost countless..
Skribs September 10, 2011, 08:52 PM So...basically, you're looking for a full-size handgun for under $1k in any caliber? For ~$400-700, you have a vast amount of reliable firearms in 9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 S&W.
If you're looking for a woods walking gun, depending on what you expect to run into, you might want to go with something with a bit more umph, such as a Glock 20 or a .357 revolver. Again, you can get those in the $400-700 range.
My Dad and I just bought my Mom a Ruger SP101 for when they go hiking, and she loves it. She can't handle the .357, though, so she only carries .38s in it. When asked "will that stop a bear", her response was "I don't have to. I just have to slow down my husband." Kidding aside, it is a nice gun, as are MANY other options in that price range.
ETA: Sorry, didn't see the "light rail" requirement, so I guess most revolvers are out (there are revolvers with a light rail). Also, you can carry a light in one hand and the hand gun in the other (I don't have a dedicated light on my pistol ATM). Still, there are many, many options that do have a light rail in the price range, and Glock 20 in 10mm might have the umph you want for woods work.
Katana8869 September 11, 2011, 12:14 AM Ruger SR9C. It's the next step up in the Ruger line, is a great CCW pistol in it's own right and it can take the full sized SR9 magazines (even comes with one that is equipted with a grip sleeve for a full-sized grip surface.) It shoots like a full sized gun, conceals like a compact. Seems like the perfect answer IMO! :)
451 Detonics September 11, 2011, 11:59 AM The Glock 19 is probably the overall favorite of the CCW 9's out there today. Works well for everything listed in the OP and is very well priced, especially on the secondary market.
partricp September 11, 2011, 01:28 PM I really like my Taurus PT92, it carries well when the weather allows an extra layer.
dcarch September 12, 2011, 02:19 PM Glock 20 or 21 would seem to suit your purposes quite well, but were I in your boots, I would probably buy an IWI Jericho in .40 cal or 9mm. I just personally don't like 9mm very much, but caliber is your prerogative. http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg/isr/jericho-941-e.html
