back again with a different question..
So in working with the savage tonight, i reliably found the following...

60gr vmax if just barely seated in the shell is 2.592
after i get it seated up against the rifling its 2.429

Using 55gr FMJBT bulk stuff just barely seated is 2.389
seated against the rifling is 2.370

I know saami lists max at 2.260

so 2 questions:
1. is it worth trying to pursue seating beyond 2.260 given the above?
2. if so, how much of the bullet should be seated in the neck to be deemed safe?

using the 55gr FMJBT as an example im not sure .019 is enough.

thanks

A general rule of thumb is one bullet diameter seated into the case.

Not really, experiment and find what shoots best in your rig.

A lot of cartridges don't have necks a full calber long. The adage of seating "one caliber deep" goes back to black powder cartridge days and it was done to make sure the bullets didn't fall out when carried around in hunter's pockets, it has no valid meaning today.
