Got my First Big Bore Rifle. It is an Interarms Mark X in 458 Winchester Magnum. I managed 12 factory 510gr SP's @ 2040fps before I had too much fun.

Wimp !
I shot a whole box through the first one I got to shoot!
But, they were reloads at "only" 1,980fps.
I really, really teased the owner who I chrono'd the ammo for. I told him to "up" the load so he wouldn't get stomped in Africa. He said they were loaded "down" for the tropical heat..........
But, I did enjoy the rifle. I'm still looking for one for sale. Couldn't afford one when they were new.

Thanks guys. I was lucky and traded into it. Ordered some reduced loads, 405gr FPSP's @ 2200fps, from Wisconsin Cartridge Corp to try. At only 8.5lbs she recoils with authority.

That's really pretty wood.
Better than any other Mark X I've seen.

That old Lion load is a stiff one...but better than just pissing off ol' Simba. Add a 1-4 power scope with crosshair and post, a good load with solids, and it will be ready for some of the feral range bulls out in West Texas...fun stuff in the cane breaks along the Rio Grande....

Fine looking gun. I used my .458 to shoot a mulie. Used Rem 510 soft point. At 160 yards it picked the 200 pound deer up and moved it up hill some. It got wrapped around a bunch of lodgepole pines and it took time to get it some where to dress it. I had less meat ruined than when I shoot my .243. Watch the area behind the animal as these heads could kill two or three deer per shot. Have fun and bangaway.

Nice wood , very nice bedding job which should keep it together. Hint; use Warne STEEL Maxima bases and lever rings, the aluminum weaver ones aren't up to it. You could put a Harts recoil reducer in a hole drilled under the but pad, they really work as do Limbsaver pads.

Lovely! I loaded some 350 grain Speers/AA 2230 powder (IIRC) in mine and it shot very well. Never killed anything with it. :(
I see yours is drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. I would have to try that out if it were mine. :)

Yeah, the weavers were there from last owner. Warne bases were after the butt pad on my list of priorities. I thought about trying a Breako 8oz recoil reducer. I'll make that decision after I try some 405's.

It is? What holes and what receiver sight would you recommend?

Beautiful rifle that oozes class....thoughtfully swept back bolt handle, useable leaf sights and that gorgeous walnut stock! I love those Interarms actions. My Dad just had one barreled to 338-06 and will probably be taking it on our elk hunt in November. Why don't they still make 'em that way instead of out of plastic and stainless?

I'd strongly recommend one of the old steel Redfield micrometer sights. They're low profile, easy to adjust and tough. They can be had on eBay regularly and any one for any '98 Mauser should fit your rifle. I have one on my Mauser Scout rifle and wouldn't take for it.

That would make for a fine jackrabbit rifle around here.

In your last picture, note the two holes filled with screws below the rear scope base. That's your mounting holes for a receiver sight. :)
I have never had a receiver sight on a hard kicking rifle, so no recommendation. I would imagine a light (aluminum) sight would not subject the mount to as much torque upon firing, but that's speculation on my part.

This could be a fascinating test.
Greg Rodriguez slapped an Aimpoint H1 on a Blaser R8 and wrote it up. Several guys over on AR added red dots to 470NE DR's and have had great results. Since I wil just be testing the waters I plan on using a Vortex Sparc. Should hold up to the 375H&H level reduced loads I'll be shooting. Whether I really like it or not the Sparc will be moved to my 15-22 and either a H1 or 1-4x scope sourced.

I've had the same model rifle(without the nice wood) for about 13 years now. The adjustable trigger on the Mark X Witworth is the best trigger I've ever used and the guns came with the receiver sight holes drilled and tapped-it's not an after market deal.
You can still get good deals on the Mark X, you just have to look a little harder.

If you decide to try reloading you can give Trail Boss powder a try. I use it for girlfriend loads in my 450 Alaskan, turns it into a real pussycat without sacrificing accuracy. I simply marked a case with where the base of the bullet is when seated, filled to that line, weighed the powder charge and reduced by 10% for my starting load. This works for any cartridge when using Trail Boss. Using a 405 grain bullet it made for a very fun load to shoot.
The red dot sights are becoming more popular on dangerous game rifles, I just like the versatility of the low power variable. I have owned half a dozen rifles in 9.3X74R and larger, about half wore receiver sights the other half low power variables and my Model 70 in .375 wore a one power Weaver with post and crosshairs.

The X Mark rifles are or were made by Zastava in Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia)
They are a decently made safe rifle that wont cost you the earth. IMHO if you are going to buy a big game rifle or any other rifle that would only get used occasionally and you dont want to spend alot of money the Zastava's are worth a real close look.

Well I finally made it back out to the range. Unfortunately the range we shot at only had benches and no standing. I fired 14rds of the WCC 405's (2200fps) from the bench before I had enough fun. Oddly the 405's were perfect in regards to POA/POI for the "fine bead" hold I use. No issues with feeding, extraction or ejection and the floorplate stayed close just like it should. Time to go to the gunsmith for that Pachmayr Decelerator.
My shooting partner was sighting in his Sako 300WSM and I lended a shoulder after he complained about the recoil and I saw him using a shot bag to soften the blow. After the 458 the 300WSM just tickles. He did take a shot with the 458 to his credit. His eyes welled up but he held in those tears.

Picked up Warne bases and QD rings to mount a Leupold FXII 2.5x20 Ultralight. All mounted up and ready to sight in at the range. Ought to be fun.
