otiac,

I don't like how commercialized the site is (they love and support their vendors far more than their members) but try forum.saiga-12.com. Tons of good AK info there.

I personally don't like my Tapco mag. I find it is more difficult to seat in the mag well of my AK than the com bloc mags. Now that could be my gun, my individual mag, or even me, but I am probably going to swap to the regular steel mags pretty soon. They're simple, cheap and practically bullet proof. I think the only real advantage to a poly mag is the lighter weight if you're going to be carrying a lot of them (or the US parts count if you really need it).

Tapco mags aren't "bad" they are just OK. I have 5 or 6 of them. The thing that sucks most about them is you will most likely have to fit them. The thing that is best about them is I think I only paid $8 each for them. Since I have the only WASR in the world with a tight magazine well, it took quiet a bit of work with a file and belt sander. Metal surplus is definitely the way to go.

All my AK mags are Bulgarian circle 10 waffle mags and I've been happy with them.

I have some Tapco, Bulgarian Plastic and East Bloc steel surplus and the the Steel are by far the best for me. They are smaller, and fit easier in the WASR and my pouches. I had to file down the bulgarians and Tapco, and sometimes the still don't go in right, while the steel ones always do.

The combloc steel magazine and I say combloc steel will fit the romanian AKs that century opened up from single column to fit double column magazines. The plastic ones mentioned above are not so good for this. Of the plastic magazines there is one expensive USA plastic mag that will probably fit that has not been mentioned here. My associates think that other USA made plastic mags are only good for target practice.

I see these comparisons between steel mags and Tapco mags, but honestly I think they're for different things. Steel mags are great if your gun holds them tight. Mine, and many others' don't, though. That's why I like Tapco. They're thick, so they tend to fit my AK better. I wouldn't trust them for a SHTF thing, if that means anything to you. I'd rather deal with the annoying wobble but have a great steel magazine. But for the range, I love them. Nice, solid mags.

Plus at $9 a piece at my local fun shop, I pick one up almost every time I'm in there and they have 'em.
