My pumpkin season doesn't start until Nov. 1...I know a guy that grows about 100 acres of pumpkins. Right now they bring him about 2 bucks a piece by the truckload if he picks and hauls them and about 8 bucks a piece for the city folk that want to come out and pick their own...LOL...Anyway, come Nov. 1 they are near worthless and become targets.

DEATH TO THE PLUMPKINZ!

I'll need to go early to the outdoor range in between nightshifts ... but I've been planning a plumpkin massacre for a while now.

Perhaps I'll break out the camera this time around.

I didn't know this thread was around when I bagged my first pumpkin ... one ten pounder and one two pounder ... Let's just say after unleashing the wife with her O/U and some slugs, there was half of each left.

To really destroy the plumpkin menage, you have to get your most sadistic plumpkin doctor to do some surgery and cram the cavity full of something liquid-like.
Water bottles, newspaper/rags soaked down with water, a big baggie full of water ... whatever.

The truly demented stuff the next batch of victim plumpkins full of the remains of the previous plumpkins.

Hmm, maybe a nice 10 pounder with a 1 pound addition of Tannerite is in order. Will definately have to take video of that one :D

The horror!

Yeah because they care deeply about the well being pie-filling gords.

"gourds"

And Sweet Potato Pie is better anyway, canned pumpkin is nasty stuff and to be avoided at all costs, as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe I'll put cans of "pumpkin" in a pumpkin?

That would be worth busting out a rifle for ... M1 Carbine, or SKS? (both have bayonets to charge the pumpkin horde with if ammo runs out)

Ah screw it, the Carbine fits in a more convenient bag (funny how the CMP has a perfect M1 Carbine bag, isn't it?) and I have soft points I've been wanting to test since winter ... Carbine it is!

Now to convince the Mrs to pick us up some nasty cans of "pumpkin" as well as the gourds themselves. And some water jugs, and some newspaper ... this is going to be a heavy range trip, luckily I'll only have to carry most of the stuff one way!

I'd like to suggest another category

Last year we made Jack-O-Lanterns out of whole pumpkins, with pistols.
So in addition to bonus points for video, post up a picture of the best/worst bullet-carved pumpkin art, the rules are that you can set the gourd up, prop it as needed, but should only fire from the firing line, no walking up to execution range for close-up carving.

Thank you for correcting my spelling mistake. (no sarcasm)

I like the quick-carve jack o' lantern idea.

Pumpkins are fun to hunt, but don't make good trophy mounts for the wall!

I spotted a herd of Punkalopes hiding on the backstop

I got most of them, we suffered light casualties when they attacked us with flying bits of orange flesh and goo.

This guy was especially vicious, look at those nasty eyebrows and compressed angry mouth!
(OK, I expect to lose the category I suggested, but I had fun trying! A complete lack of artistic ability coupled with a poor selection of mouth location led to a seriously borked Jack-O-Lantern)

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zzojF2Y2Q90/Tow6U-l0MuI/AAAAAAAABlw/vOn6AEhEJik/s800/2011-10-04_19-10-01_240.jpg
We were running out of daylight, after this picture, we reloaded magazines for everything, got in close, and made sure there wasn't anything to clean up but the plastic. Little pumpkin bits and the metal targets (a junk pan from Goodwill I took to/left at the range months ago and what appears to be the remains of a helium tank) were all we left behind, I chucked the big pumpkin bits into the wild area next to the backstop, maybe the range will supply pumpkins to us next year instead of us having to lug pumpkins 150 yards by hand.
The wife picked up pumpkins for us, and was skeptical the whole time about wasting a night off in between shifts on waking up early and blasting pumpkins to smithereens ... and now she wants to do it again, soon ... with a different selection of weapons, except the M1 Carbine with soft points (which caused most of the missing pumpkin sections). I forgot the bayonet, I wanted to mount my Jack-O-lantern on it for a photo, but as my attempt at making a face on a pumpkin was a failure, it didn't matter. Next time I'm trying a 10/22 with tech-sights and a good prone shooting position, for this failure I used my mkIII target pistol up close at execution range.

Next time I want the gourds filled before getting shot, as well. We blew the tops off a few of them and then stuffed with cardboard junk, and I tried to fill with water ... but as MrsBFD had (wisely) selected almost hollow carving pumpkins, they were a bit brittle and had fractures all over, not able to hold water at all. Stuffing the pumpkins ahead of time should help with that, I want to use a shredded paper and water slurry, or if it is really cold out I might just cast gelatin in the gourds and leave them in the trunk overnight.
MrsBFD's skeptical attitude about pumpkin hunting may have been cured ... but she still looks at me like I'm spouting gibberish when I mention loading the gourds with cheap pumpkin pie filling cans.

Does stuffing 2lbs of explosives into a 8" gourd count?
Last year we annihilated 400+ lbs of pumpkin with something similar to tannerite... but better (requires explosives license - the good stuff).

Make sure to get your tags. I hate game thieves. Pumpkin poaching is just wrong, and ruins it for the rest of us.

Hey now, when you guys come down to the Ozarks, leave your city-fied ways behind. Punkin poaching is a time honored tradition down here.

Shoot fur, man's got a right to feed his family. (Big Spit, to emphasize the point)(Damn Yankees.)

If I win the Jack O Lantern contest with that sorry entry ... ...

They will be much cheaper around Nov. 4th and some of us don't have or want a shotgun.

At a distance of 100-200 feet, concrete blocks are more fun with a rifle, because you can see the impact dust without the need for a buddy's binoculars.

bigfatdave
October 9, 2011, 03:11 AM
What shotgun?

That was .22lr pistol, .380acp pistol, .45acp pistol and .30carbine carbine (duh)

And at $3 per pumpkin, I greatly exceeded the cost of targets in the first magazine loading on those centerfire guns ... but how about this, you bring the shotguns and I'll bring the pumpkins, I'll even help you carry your stuff back, as the pumpkins get pulverized and/or tossed into the brush when we're done.

LOL! I'm not in the city, man!. I should really change that, as it gives people a certain "city folk" perception.

I'm in Jefferson County. I do come down and over your way a few times a year.
