I was thumbing my Jan '03 American Rifleman and saw their review of the DPMS A-22. I already have a souped up 10/22. Does anyone know why the DPMS A-22 wouldn't be legal in Kalifornia? It is a complete .22 rimfire rifle with pistol grip and detachable magazine. Feather Industries sells a Kali legal rimfire rifle with pistol grip and detachable magazine. Also, Armscorp is selling some weird looking Kali legal AR and AK lookalikes in .22 with pistol grips and detachable magazines. The only sticking points I can think of are possibly if the lower can be used on a centerfire upper and if this is considered an AR type rifle (although I'm not sure if this counts since it is a rimfire rifle).

Oh yes, I'm not gonna leave Kali to go buy a real AR and yes, I know the state sucks.

They're fine. TargetMasters in Milpitas had one for sale a while back, don't know if they still have it.

Larryw, not to sound in anway like I'm doubting you, cuz I would so much like to see this available, but are your sure it wasn't that goofy looking Armsorp AR looking thingy? Did it look like a straight up AR-15?

Well, it sure looked just like an AR, felt like one too (although the balance seemed a bit off). Not absloutely sure it was a DPMS 22, but based on the article in AR, I'm 99% sure.

Operative issue here is rimfire vs. centerfire, look at the end of the following PP (from http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/forms/pdf/awguide.pdf):

Penal Code section 12276.1 complements rather than supersedes the Roberti-Roos Assault Weapons Control Act of 1989. A firearm that is of a type specified in Penal Code Section 12276.1 that has any of the specified aracteristics listed for that type of firearm is considered a Category 3 (generic characteristics) assault weapon. Under Penal Code section 12276.1, a firearm’s make, model, or markings have no bearing on whether it is an assault weapon. A firearm’s status as an assault weapon under this category is determined solely by its characteristics. There are three general types of firearms that are controlled by the generic characteristics assault weapons laws. These types include semiautomatic centerfire rifles, semiautomatic pistols, and semiautomatic or cylinder shotguns.

I wouldn't mind a "dedicated" DPMS lower to go with my dedicated upper. Kalif (or is it Caliph) sucks.

Quick update, stopped by Targetmasters and the gun is not made by DPMS but Professional Ordinance. Based on the sample targets that came with the two they have in stock ($670), they shoot very, very nice.

I looked around to find a pic of the Professional Ordnance .22. They call it the Type 22. Isn't Professional Ordnance bankrupt?
I pulled this pic off auctionarms. The seller is in California and is asking $550. Too bad it's a PO rifle.
