The Last Gun I'd Ever let Go Of

10/6/2011 - I decided to revise this after reading some replies, but its still the same thread, just trying to clarify the question:

Suppose you are broke, no job, and have nothing of any value except your gun collection. Someone offers to buy them all and you agree but will keep just one gun. Which one would you keep?

I'll go first, it would be my Ruger GP100. Not my favorite, but it is the most versatile and practical.

Every day carry can double as a home defense handgun. However a home defense handgun might be too large for EDC. I'm with youngda9, the one that you trust to save your life.

If I could only have one gun period, I'd keep my 6" Colt King Cobra. I can use it for SD and can and have used it for deer/small game. Even though I have more than one 4 inch .357, I'd still keep the 6 because it's the first handgun I ever bought.

I would keep my hunting rifle. Worst case scenario i could still hunt for food. With all the money i save from that i could buy my other guns back.

I would bite the bullet and just get a holster for my PT911 ... it would double as carry and HD.

I had to pick the auto rifle. I'd just feel naked without the M4. If it got bad enough to sell everything off, even my carry rig, then I doubt carry laws would be enforceable at that point and I'd just wear a speedo and an M4.

A 12ga shotgun (in my case, a Remington 870). It works for home defense too, and is versatile enough to hunt virtually everything in this area that you can hunt. You can hunt all birds, turkey, deer, small game, etc with a 12ga.

I conceal carry because one day I MIGHT need it, but realistically I most probably never will. My hunting guns I actually use all throughout the year.

I voted every day carry because my firearm primary use is SD/HD.

Home defense shotgun. Because a pump shotgun is the Swiss army knife of guns.

My Winchester 94 in .30-30 though my EDC 642 would be held as long as possible before that. But in the end, a firearm that can hunt and defend, at a reasonable range for both, is the best if it must be an only weapon.

Tough call, I want to say my 336, but in my heart I know the last one standing would be my J.C. Higgins Model 101.7 SxS .410

It was given to me on my 14th birthday by my mother, it was given to her when my grandfather passed. She passed in 2000 and I've taken more animals with it than just about any other gun in the safe(except the 336, because I use it every year for hogs and deer)

1Kperday, I'm with you, somethings are better without pictures...GAH!

I'd keep my full sized SP-01 Phantom, I can carry it easily enough concealed, and it will hit out to 50 yards for me. I am trying like HECK to not have to GET to that point, however!

I'd keep my J frame 38 special. I have bigger guns that I can carry, but this one is ALWAYS with me, even as a back-up when I carry another. It can absolutely pull double duty as home defense and EDC. I don't hunt, ( I would like to one day ) so this was easy for me.

The last gun I'd want to get rid of would be my Beretta 92FS. But given the premise that I'm broke, I'd want to get as much cash as possible, so I'd keep a cheap gun. Between the Neos and the LCP, the latter is the more useful, so that's the one I'd keep.

Where's the None of the Above option? I've never put any sentimental value on guns. They're just tools. I've never met a gun I wouldn't sell in a heartbeat if someone offered me my asking price. Then I'd replace it with something else as soon as I could and carry on.

I can't vote. I could get down to three, but no farther:

12 gauge pump
.30 caliber bolt action rifle
.357 revolver

Strictly utilitarian, but can't imagine fewer than that.

The rifle makes me dangerous to enemies, but a handgun I carry with me.

I guess I'd have to take up open carry of my rifle. :)

My 870. It is my main HD gun, the gun I hunt with most often, and works fine as a range toy. First gun too.

I can't carry where I spend my time anyway, so that isn't as much of a factor for me as it is for some of you guys.

Probably, my Les Baer TRS .45 ACP; or my 3.5" Smith & Wesson 27-2~?
Could go with a 6" S&W model 19-5, 6" 686-5, 4" 19-3~! ;) :D

Or: a Remy 12 gague 870 "Marine Magnum" shotty, or a Rock River LAR-15
"Operator Elite" 5.56~!

Kind of outside the parameters of what you are asking, but...
The last gun to go would be the most irreplaceable: a family heirloom 1863 Springfield that is in good enough shape to shoot and hunt with, if neccessary. After that my model 94 will stay, being entirely appropriate for home defense and hunting.

I have to say my Every Day Carry.

Your EDC is your very last line of defense in any given situation.

You just CAN'T wear your shotgun or carbine on your belt under your shirt and there ARE situations that require both your hands being occupied, even if only for a moment.

And having a long gun strapped over your shoulder or across your chest just wouldn't fly in every possible scenario.

Though they'd be 2nd and 3rd to last-to-go, my shotty and carbine would have to go first.

Now, which of THOSE two to go first would be the 'real' tough decision.

Suppose you are broke, no job, and thinking of selling all but one of your guns, which one would you keep?
In this situation, I'd definitely go with the Automatic Rifle. Worst comes to worst, I could hunt with it, but it also fills the HD role well.

Tough tough call. I could get down to two. My trusty ole remmy 870, and glock27 would stay. Well I guess if it got terrible I'd keep the remmy. Oh God in heaven I hope it never comes to that though.

The absolute last firearm I would part with would have to be my Savage Mark II 22 LR pretty much due to the fact that it is about priceless because of sentimental value. It was my first firearm, my Dad bought me for the hefty sum of 99 dollars at the local wally world and IMO it has payed for itself several times over. I have killed more game with that rifle than all of my other guns put together and after all of these years and countless rounds she still shoots like she's brand new.

I too had to go with other because I finally have it whittled down to my favorites, and I would hate to let one go. Each has a specific use, but I would never let go of the Ruger Standard my dad and I bought for my 11th b-day.

Springfield XDM, most expensive handgun I've ever owned and the most accurate as well as reliable too. I voted other because I don't use it for home defense/carry or anything (revolver and shotgun are dedicated for that purpose) but I still take it to the range all the time...got 4k rounds through it in a year and it still works great, two jams in all those rounds. Love how accurate, reliable, and simple it is to take down/clean. Great gun all around and I'd sell off everything else I had before getting rid of it.

THAT for me as well!

Although, if I got laid-off for some reason, I'd could make money by playing music in sleazy bars and from another side business I've had for the past 14 years. So I would most likely invest my time and energy working harder at what I could still do to make money, than by selling off my possessions.
If I still needed quick cash; I'd sell off some of my vintage slot cars first (easy quick cash), then I'd sell a few of my guitars and amps, after that I would consider liquidating some of my firearms.

If it had to be only one I keep my Benelli SuperNova.

The thing is some guns, like a Ruger 10/22, just aren’t going to bring in enough to bother selling. Not when they’re cheap to operate and useful on small game. I’d also hold onto one carry gun for as long as possible but it would go before the 22lr or 12 ga.

My Beratta 21 will be the last one to go. It light, compact and has been relaible. Ammo is easy to find and not abusive to the shooter. I call it my old man's gun, due to that fact it will be my old man's gun.

Every day carry.

It is useable everywhere I may have a gun. It can be a carry gun, a car gun, a home defense gun, a range gun, etc.

For me it would be my Glock 26

This is a trick question.

I'd be torn between my go-to gun (rifle) and a carry gun.

Tomorrow I might feel different, but if I could just have one it would be a gun I don't currently carry or use for HD: CZ 75B SA in 9mm. I could be using it in both roles; I just have other guns that suit the specific roles better for me.

If not that then my 7-shot BPS.

For me, it would be my hunting rifle. It's what I most often take to the rannge to social plink. I take it out to hunt every year multiple times. I've trained enough where I can defend myself with it if need be. Of my hunting rifles. The second to last would be the 30-06. The last would be my lever action 30-30. Reason for lever action is I simply like it the best. Sorry you are in this bind.

Not in a bind - it is a hypothetical situation because my original post scenario (SHTF) was inappropriate for the high standards of The High Road.

Got some very interesting answers from you folks. I actually started this thread because of different gun forum where I got jealous of a poster who had plenty of guns and plenty of money to buy more guns - it got me to thinking how important owning guns was to some folks. Y'all didn't let me down - there's some who can take em or leave em and theres other who would sell their wife first - amazing!!!

I voted home defense handgun, but now thought about the question a bit more. I'd have to go with my M4. It excells in home defense, hunting, and protection in a Katrina like event. Shotguns are for these purposes too, but I like the accuracy and quick follow up shots of the M4.
