Hello all this is my first post so be easy on me. I recently (6-8mos) purchased a Taurus 24/7 Pro CDS, have had absolutely nothing but problems out of it so I am considering purchasing a new carry weapon. I have looked into several different firearms, thinking of switching to compact 1911, CZ Rami, CZ 75 B, or possibly even a Bersa thunder UC, I seem to have bad luck choosing pistols so i was wondering if anyone had any knowledge or experience with some or all of these weapons. Looking for suggestions. Biggest concerns are conceal-ability and reliability (not necessarily in that order). Thank you High Road community for your help.

Anyway back to the question. I have 2 Bersa UCs and both have been 100% reliable with over 1K through each, and they also have nice triggers. I have been very impressed with them, especially for the price. My EDC is either a Bersa or a Walther PPS.

IMHO, the debate starts and ends with a Glock 23. Light, easy to carry and most important-----RELIABILE.
That said, I have a Taurus Pro DS in .40 S&W that has been reliable as well. Sometimes with Taurus, it's a crap shoot.

48 posts and already too much attitude to answer anothers question. I've had a couple of Bersa pistols, and they were okay, but not perfect. Jammed every now and then. I have heard good things about the CZ, but have no personal experience there. When I was lookin for a CCW, I went through the Taurus, Bersa, Kel-tec line and couldn't find anything really reliable. Eventually settled on a Glock 26, and that is the one I would recommend as a good CCW pistol. Also, if you didn't mind going the route of a revolver, the S&W 642 is a good, reliable, and not too expensive CCW.

For CCW I recommend polymer...in whatever flavor you like (Glock, S&W, Springfield)

I've been carrying 17 years now...and I've went through several guns in that time, they all worked...but NOTHING carries like a small polymer pistol (mine is a Glock 36)

There are many options out there.
Glock, XD, Bersa, Ruger, S&W..... and many more all make reliable carry peices.

One of the biggest things that will help you make a good choice is to rent guns at a range, ask friends who have handguns if you can shoot them, strike up a conversation at the range with others who are shooting.

TJ looking for 9MM or larger and my budget is around 500, i am pretty comfortable with up to 40 poly frame after that too much recoil for me. and batmann i did like my glock but my 23 was not reliable in the 500 or so rounds i put through it and sold it back to buds gun shop. Thank you for all of your opinions and help so far already have me leaning toward bersa, i really liked the UC at buds today.

I had a 24/7oss too and had nothing but issues with it. Never again will I buy that crap. For concealed carry a colt 1911 compact will do. Also look into sigs 229/239, kahr, S&W and sub compact glocks.

I wouldn't give up on Glock just because of 1 bad one...I also had one a few years back, when the G36 first came out, but I decided to give it one more try and bought another G36 a while back.

I'm very glad I did....and I'm not a Glock fanboy, but I want a small, thin, tough, and reliable 45acp.

More often than not...the subcompact Glocks run like a swiss watch.

Although I have no experience with them, if I were looking for an autoloader for $500 or less CCW I would check out the Kahr CM9 or PM40. They look as though they would carry well, and they seem to be a popular choice.

I've had a Bersa Thunder .380 and it was a fine gun, but it just wasn't a perfect fit for me so I traded it on something else.

Sorry you've had bad luck with Taurus. I've been lucky that all of mine have been great. And by the way, Welcome to THR!

I went from Taurus PT917 to Beretta PX4. The PT917 was crap outa the box. Cheap Beretta wannabe. They even shipped it with a visibly crooked barrel. Taurus should stick to revolvers.

I'm seriously considering a Ruger SR9c or maybe a S&W M&P9c. I have nothing against Glocks but I don't like the grips.

If concealability and reliability are your top two concerns, I'm gonna tell you to reconsider the Glock.

I went through similar mental gyrations a few years back and just didn't want to go Glock. After doing extensive research into the designs and specifications of various options, shooting and carrying many, I ended up choosing a Glock 19.

Advantages to the Glock system are many and well stated by many on this forum. It's just a very difficult to beat system when you consider, reliability, accuracy, concealment, availability of parts (and parts are cheap and plentiful), simplicity of design (which is high on my list), ability to detail strip them yourself in a few minutes and get them back together easily, power to weight ratio, rugged components, instinctive operation (pull the trigger and it goes bang), and safety (there are 3), high capacity, and I could go on and on...

I'm no Glock fanboy and Glocks are not perfect, they definitely take some getting used to, but to me they are extremely hard to beat.

IMO your best options are Glock or the Ruger SR9c or Ruger SR40c. I absolutely love both glock and ruger pistols so you can't go wrong with either. They are epitome of reliability.

The old Taurus 24/7 PT Pro C 9mm. is the only Taurus I've ever regretted getting rid of. Not a single jam or problem in several hundred rounds. But I've been told by owners of the same pistol I had the only "good" one. Happens I guess.

My Glock 23 has been nothing but reliable and I've fired enough rounds through it to have lost count. I'ts one I'm not likely to trade. And I never say that about semi autos.

I had a Bersa .380. Wasn't bad, I traded it later on a Kel Tec PF9. I really liked my PF9, it worked well for a while but, then it turned south. Extracting issues and the breakdown pin broke twice. Kel Tec was great with fixing it but, i lost faith in the gun and traded it on a Kahr P9. Bud's has those and the much more affordable CW/CM serious at their range counter for rent...you might want to take a look at them. I think they are 371 and 398 for either 9 or .40.

I don't know anything about the CZ's, other than a lot of people really like them.

I like my glock but, it is a thick brick by comparison to some other options. If you don't mind similar width and weight, there are all kinds of options...Glock, M&P, XD, CZ, Sig 2022, Ruger...

I just gut a Ruger LC9 to replace a Ruger LCP380. I like the LCP380 fine but i wanted more fire power. Go with the LC9. :)

You will get lots of recommendations (overwhelming almost) so I would say if you have a range near you that rents out guns, try them to see which one feels good (or borrow a buddy's etc.).

That being said, if you are looking for a CCW piece and a quasi range gun (certainly not a competition piece), I would suggest a Kel-Tec P11 as it is the most affordable, compact 9mm that I know of. Check it out here for a real good price:

There are a lot of solid pistols in the $500 range. I happen to like the Glock 26/27 series, but the S&W M&P-9c/40c, the Ruger SR-9c and LC9 are all solid pistols as well. A lot of folks like Kahr as well, although they can be a bit finicky out of the box until they're broken in.

See if your local range has a bunch in stock that you can try.

My standard answer to this question is to direct the person to a local range that rents handguns. If you can find one in your area with a decent selection go in prepared to spend $100+ on fees and ammo. Test drive as many as you can afford, it will save you from repeating your current headache.

I have 3 Taurus 24/7 in 9mm and have had only 1 misfeed among all 3 and it was a bad round. I had a 24/7 in 45ACP before the 9's and it would not fire a full mag w/o a jam. Just goes to show you each gun is different.

I will second that in that my 24/7 OSS Tactical 9 has been just as reliable as my PT-92 (but that Beretta design/feel/balance still wins the day for me).

A friend gave me one of those (actually he gave me the whole magazine)...It stays in the gun.

I do plan on ordering them for my other 3 mags too, just haven't done it yet.
