I can tell you that serving in the Old Guard is one of the most heart-wrenching, thankless jobs in the military.

I don't care what anyone says. The guys i served with there are absolute heroes in my eyes, and will always have my respect. The author is right. We were torn daily because of the desire to prove ourselves in combat, and instead we unloaded the dead. And don't even get me started on the rampant uncontrollable revenge-mongoring after we got done cleaning up the pentagon.

Great post... brought a tear to my eye.

Thank you for posting this. I buried 27 friends over 18 years of war and civil unrest (not to mention countless acquaintances), and I'm not ashamed to admit that there were (and are) tears in my eyes while reading this.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Very touching.

That's got to be some tough duty, but what a class act!. When Hurricane Isabel came to town last Fall, the brass was going to allow the guards at the Tomb of the Unknowns to stay in out of the strom. Didn't happen, the troops wouldn't have any of it and were out there through it all.

Thanks, Fitz, to you and your comrades.

That's a great (but sobering) article. My childhood minister joined the Army and ended up as a chaplain in the Old Guard.

Not to cause thread veer, but this reminds me of the movie "Gardens of Stone" starring James Caan.
